Kodungallur Fort (Portuguese: Fortaleza da São Tomé) is a fort built by the Portuguese in 1523. It is located at Kottapuram in Kodungallur, Thrissur. Also known as Kottapuram Fort, Crankannur Fort, St. Thomas Fort and Tipu's Fort. It is one of the three pillars of Portuguese rule in Kochi This fort was the strongest and most impregnable among the Portuguese forts. Kodungallur fort was under the command of Urbano Fialho Ferreira. The Dutch came to Kodungallur from Kollam, receiving orders to capture the fort from their headquarters in Batavia. But the king of Kochi was encamped in the fort with 400 Nair soldiers led by Paliathacha. The Dutch had help from the Samodhi. The Dutch blocked the land and sea routes and began building a tunnel near the fort. But they could not hold their own against the cannon of the Portuguese. Although the Dutch offered a truce, Fialho intensified the attack. But Paliyathachan betrayed the Portuguese. Paliathachan, who sneaked out of the fort, met the Dutch and told them an easy way to enter the fort. On January 15, 1662, the Dutch resumed their attack. They were able to make a crack in the fort with cannon and enter through it. After capturing the main parts of the fort, the Portuguese boarded canoes and escaped to Ambazhakkatte Seminary. Fialho, 200 Portuguese soldiers and about 100 Nair soldiers were killed.

Known as Crankanur Fort “Kottapuram Fort”. Built by the Portuguese in 1523 AD. The Dutch captured the fort in 1663. Later Travancore fort was bought for a price with the permission of the British East India Company. In 1789, Tipu Sultan attacked and destroyed the fort. In 1909, the fort was declared a protected monument by the Travancore Archaeological Department. The fort was abandoned for a long time until the State Archeology Department launched an expedition in 2009. Excavations have uncovered ramparts, foundations of several buildings, human skeletons, and archaeological remains representing the Portuguese-Dutch period and earlier periods. Entry to the general public is permitted on all days except Monday. The people, and the people alone, are the motive force in the making of world history❤️

Cranganoor Fort or Kottappuram Muziris Fort - this site museum will unveil the story of Portuguese and Dutch invasions, the history and architecture of the fort as well as its excavation and conservation. The fort is a part of Muziris Heritage Project. You get to see the ruins and excavation sites of the fort. Periyar river is flowing nearby. The area is decorated with many beautiful trees. History: It was built by the Portuguese in CE 1503. It was captured and destroyed by the Dutch in 1663. The Fort had a strategic position, on the mouth of the river Periyar before it joins the Arabian Sea, which gave it the advantage of controlling the ships and boats that passed to and from the interior of Malabar. Visiting time 10 am to 6 pm. MONDAY Holiday. Entry Fee - Rs. 10/person

Description
The Fortaleza da São Tomé, also known as Cranganore Fort or Kottapuram Fort, is situated in Kodungallur of Thrissur District in Kerala, India. It was of 18 feet in thickness and was made of laterite. The stone fort was built by the Portuguese in 1523 and was named after Thomas the Apostle.
