A couple of weeks back, I had the chance to visit Khumavurity Waterfalls near Achankovil with my family, and it was an absolutely refreshing experience. Hidden amidst the lush greenery of the Western Ghats, this spot is still relatively untouched and offers a perfect escape from the busy routines of daily life.
The journey itself was enjoyable—surrounded by thick forests, winding roads, and the cool mountain breeze. Once we reached the falls, the sight of water cascading down the rocky slopes into clear pools was truly mesmerizing. The sound of the rushing water combined with the chirping of birds created a soothing atmosphere.
What made the experience even more special was the peaceful, less-crowded environment. It felt safe and comfortable to spend time with family, especially since children could enjoy the shallow areas under supervision. We even packed some snacks and sat by the rocks, enjoying nature at its best.
If you are someone who loves nature, waterfalls, or simply wants a serene outing with family or friends, I would definitely recommend a trip to Khumavurity Waterfalls. It’s a hidden gem worth exploring, especially for those visiting Achankovil and nearby regions.
Tips for visitors: • Carry drinking water and light snacks. • Wear comfortable footwear suitable for walking on rocks. • Best to visit during monsoon or just after, when the water flow is strong. • Keep the place clean and respect the natural...
Read moreKumbhavurutty falls was a great surprise along the route to achenkovil. This one is a hidden amazement deep within the forest.
We had to get down at the facilitation center at Kumbhavurutty where we were introduced to the instalment at the plce. It consists of a few huts, interpretation center, cafeteria and the office. These structures were totally out of place interms of the architecture. The facades didn’t really gel with the bucolic beauty of the place. Outright repulsive would be the apt word to describe it.
But then we were taken on a 400m trek into the forest. Covering rugged landcapes and crossing undulating stream, we arrived at the beautiful waterfalls. The falls isn’t too high or wide, but yet was a spectacle in itself. The waterfall drops from a height of 10m from above and lands at a tiny pool which then overflows into 3 more pools and then flows downstream. It is said that a few arrogant youngsters have lost their lives playing at the falls. So watch out for some steep and drowning areas. Especially the rocky surface could project a threat.
Anyhow, from a distance the falls is a great exhibition of the potpourri of...

Reach there early at-least before 2 PM. They will ask you to leave around 4.45 PM to 5 PM, so that we can get out of the forest area before sunset.
Whether you go by a car or bike or van, leave the forest area before sunset as you are literally in the middle of the forest with extremely narrow roads and tons of hairpin bends. The trenches at the side of the road are very dense and deep. So be careful.
They will charge you around 50 per head as entry fee and 30 rupees for bike parking.
Price is worth it as they maintain the falls and the area around it pretty well.
You have to trek about half a kilometre to reach the falls from the parking area. So not at all recommended for older people and people who are not comfortable climbing (they have made concrete stairs for easy climbing but very steep stairs)
The waterfall is clean and the water is ice cold even on warmer days.
The waterfall’s area almost resemble a swimming pool with and attached waterfalls. So you will enjoy spending time in it.
Officers are helpful so feel free to ask them if you...
