At an altitude of 2500 m above sea level and tucked into the dark folds of Western Ghats, Kakkayam forms the part of a Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary.ย Kakkayam welcomes you with its much-publicized reservoir, dam, powerhouse and the valleys you see around. That's all the beginning. The real buzz waits inside, deep in the woods.Even in a casual stroll outside the woods of Kakkayam, the prospects of crossing the track of elephants are huge, and at times they come out near the dam giving goosebumps to the tourists. Don't panic. You are in their home. Stories are rife about the visit of other animals as well, but elephants hog all the limelight in this place. Early mornings, you'd strive to resist following the sweet bird call from deep inside the jungle. Take a deep breath and follow it.Even in a casual stroll outside the woods of Kakkayam, the prospects of crossing the track of elephants are huge, and at times they come out near the dam giving goosebumps to the tourists. ย ย ย Read moreA peaceful, adventurous, pleasent, blah blah blah๐ ...... you will get an awesome experience here while you visit here during monsoon season. Chances of wildlife spotting (elephants, jungle foul, monkeys, bison) an awesome veiw of kakkayam dam, misty & foggy road with lush green blanket & hairpins.
Now you don't need to spend even a penny for travelling through that road to kakkayam( past we have to pay rs 40/-) the natives had raised a protest so that we can travel for free... we have to walk little bit towards urakkuzhi water falls, which had given a fearfull atmosphere, blood thirsty leeches are all over the mashy area nearby " BE CAREFUL "
For two wheeler parking we have to pay rs 40/- whereas Kakkayam boating (rs 750 for a boat trip even 1 traveller or upto max 5 travellers) gives an unexperienced feeling. We had gone through speed boating in heavy rain & thick fog, we can see 2 beautifull water falls & sometimes elephants & bisons in those islands....
IT'S MY SUGGESTION : Try to go there in group for...
ย ย ย Read moreThe lush greenery of semi evergreen- evergreen forest patches, crimson-red giant squirrels galloping in the canopy, Myristica trees along the roadside, kick boxing Micrixalus frogs and Cnemapsis geckos on rocks near Orakuzhi waterfalls, resonating sound of large cicadas, silver tinged leaves of Mallotus tetracocus, Emrald doves in the hairpin turns of the road etc.make this place unique and immemorable for me. The ghats section is full of Ochlandra reeds, canes, Pinanga/Arenga palms?, Impatiens flowers, wild Musa sps, Begonia like plants.
I was fortunate to see sloth bear footprints on ghats section road. There are people who saw gaur, elephants etc. on this road. Malabar grey hornbills, white bellied tree pies, some rare babblers can also be seen along the road. The Kakkayam reservoir and the panoramic view of hillocks in the plain, Peruvannamuzhi lower reservoir etc. add more scenic beauty to...
