A drive to Malankara Dam is a perfect one day trip for families to unwind and to enjoy the scintillating beauty of nature. A small park has been arranged near the reservoir of the dam, which attracts families and students. An Amphi theatre that opens next month would give a revival to the tourism sector of Muttam-Kanjar area.

It is the cool atmosphere and the pleasant sight of the reservoir that draws hundreds of visitors to the Muttam – Kanjar – Malankara areas. You could enjoy a refreshing bowl of hot kanji (rice porridge) with fresh buttermilk at an eatery in front of the entrance of the dam. Boiled tapioca and fish curry too are served here.

One can enjoy the panoramic view of the dam from this path which, however, is damaged and full of potholes. The entrance area is the most beautiful spot in the catchment area of the dam. Many would be disappointed that vehicles are not allowed to the raised area which stretches to the reservoir anymore. Clicking photographs are not allowed near the entrance area from where the tickets are purchased.

The reservoir is spread in an area of 153 square kilometres. The Malankara dam is part of the Muvattupuzha Valley Irrigation project. The construction of this dam, which is a halting place for the tourists on their way to Vagamon, was completed in 1994. The visitors can even take a refreshing dip in the cool water in the reservoir. However, a warning board has been displayed here saying that only those who know swimming should get into the waters.

The park that has lots of swings seesaws and slides would definitely attract the kids. The walkway around the park is paved with tiles. Benches are arranged here from where one can enjoy the serene beauty of the water. This is the perfect place to enjoy some relaxing moments in the evening with your family.

The Amphi Theatre that opens soon would make this place even more interesting. Those who love to drive through the mist can reach the Kudayathur junction and turn to the beautiful and deserted road to Vagamon. You would be welcomed by lush green hills covered in the blanket of mist even before you reach Vagamon.

This one day trip will be enjoyable for kids and adults alike. You could even visit the Malankara dam as a halting place if you are planning a two-day trip.
