Muneeswaran Kunnu View Point
Thalappuzha: The breathtaking view from Muneeswaran Kunnu at Thalappuzha allures trek lovers onto the hilltop. The green laden meadows and the mist blanketed slopes make the hill a well-chosen spot for travellers. Over 6000 people had visited Muneeswaran Kunnu within the last three months.
This eco-tourism centre functions under the Department of Forest now. It is located 950 feet above sea level. Beyond the rainforests on the northern slopes of the hill, one gets a picturesque view of Pakshipathalam and Brahmagiri hills from the top. The eastern side of the Muneeswaran Kunnu also offers a feast for the eyes with the sights of Mananthavady town and silvery Kabini river while the southern side is embellished with tea plantations. Kottiyoor hill ranges are visible from the western side of the hill.
A Siva temple located on the top of the hill adds to the pious air of Muneeswaran hill. The visitors can enjoy both sunrise and sunset from here.
How to reach?
As the path to the hilltop is a little steep and arduous, people who love trekking are mostly choosing this destination. Muneeswaran Kunnu is situated 13 kilometres away from Mananthavady with a distance of 2 kilometres to Thalappuzha. Most of the travellers reach the top by walking through the tarred road. Those who find it difficult can opt for small vehicles too. The entry is restricted from 8 am to 6 pm. The entry fee for elders is Rs 45 and Rs 25 for children
Private resorts are functioning near the Muneeswaran Kunnu. However, the location is drained of better facilities to the visitors. Though the forest department had constructed five tents with all facilities on the top of the hill, they are not functional now. The place derives its name from the Muneeswaran Temple atop the hill. It is said the shrine was construted by the descendants of the Tamil workforce brought by the British at the beginning of the 19th century to work on tea plantations.
Makkimala, standing majestically on the other side of the Muneeswaran Hills, has also copious greenery and mountain paths and is a favoured trekking destination. Popular spots on this route include Palchuram, Kottiyoor temple, and the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary.
To reach Muneeswaran Hills, the easiest route is via the Paalchuram ghat road. The nearest town is Thalapuzha, located 3 km from the foot of the hill, while Mananthavady, the taluk headquarters, is about 15 km away.
