Muzhappilangad Beach is a drive-in beach in the Kannur district of Kerala, on the Malabar Coast of India. It stretches across 4 kilometres in length.Along the way, one gets to munch on delicacies from a number of shacks that offer authentic Malabar cuisine. It is often considered a swimmers paradise as the black rocks protect the beach from deep currents. This is a perfect way to relax and soak in this clean and well maintained beach. One can also partake in adventure sports like paragliding, parasailing and micro light flights along with water sports, power boating or a simple catamaran ride. The beach was featured among the top six best beaches for driving in the world in BBC Auto. A barrier of black rocks keeps the waves calm, making the crescent-shaped beach even more safe. These rocks are home to the blue mussel which is served as delicious seafood at the small food stalls on the beach. The beach is visited by plenty of migratory birds every season. It also attracts bird watchers from distant places. The Beach Festival, held in the month of April, is one of the salient tourist attractions of this mesmerising beach. There are a number of adventurous and fun-filled activities organised here, including parasailing, paragliding, power boating, catamaran rides etc. Despite a tourist destination the beach is a bird watching hotspot too.More than thirty species of migratory birds visit here in the winter. Among them Pectoral sandpiper and Caspian plover, sighted here in 2013 were reported for the first time in Kerala. Long, broad shore and rocky formations on the either side of the beach provide a safe place for migration.

One of the best drive-in beaches in the country and Kerala. See the pics and videos 😎 It’s great to drive along the sandy shore touching the waves from the car, it’s a 4 KM stretch shore, don’t go too much inside 😀 The sand is relatively hard/compact which helps prevent the tyres from sinking and makes driving possible comfortably There are black rocks on the beach and inside sea which act natural barriers to strong waves so bathing/swimming is possible in the beach. They are picturesque to the photos too🤩 The shore line offers beautiful sunset views, not sure of the sunrise views. Dharmadam island is visible from offshore, during low tide one can walk to it from the nearby beach (not from here) Seasonal - water sports, catamaran rides, parasailing etc and Beach festival in April The beach is clean, well-maintained, and gives a very refreshing vibe. The entry fee is just ₹40 (for car) which is worth for the experience. There are few food cart vendors for snacks and drinks, which is handy.😛 Only downside is the drive to reach through Muzhappilangad Beach Rd for a KM with narrow roads and a railway crossing. Try the Edakkad beach road. 😟 Overall, it’s a must-visit place in Kerala —unique, relaxing, and memorable!👍

The beach has unfortunately lost much of its original charm. While the recent renovation has attracted large crowds, the authorities seem to have overlooked some very important aspects of visitor experience. Traffic management is extremely poor, with vehicles moving in a haphazard manner and no clear system in place to regulate the flow. Parking is another major concern—there is hardly any designated space available, and the narrow approach roads make it even more difficult to navigate. What is most disappointing is that this is meant to be a drive-in beach, a unique identity that sets it apart. However, with the current situation, the essence of that experience is being compromised. At times, it feels as if the authorities have completely forgotten the very purpose and uniqueness of this beach. If proper planning is done—such as creating adequate parking zones, widening or regulating access roads, and setting up a structured traffic control system—this beach could once again become the enjoyable, hassle-free destination it was meant to be. I sincerely hope the management takes corrective action soon so that visitors can truly appreciate and experience the beauty of this special place.

What Makes It Special

The beach stretches over 4 kilometers of compact, smooth sand that’s perfect for driving. Visitors can take their vehicles directly onto the beach, enjoying the rare thrill of driving with the sea on one side and a vast stretch of sand on the other. Whether you’re in a car, bike, or jeep, the experience of cruising along the shoreline is unmatched.

Scenic Beauty

Muzhappilangad offers breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea. The endless horizon, the gentle waves lapping at the shore, and the lush greenery bordering the beach create a postcard-perfect scene. The sunsets here are spectacular, with the setting sun casting golden hues across the water and sand.

Nearby Attractions • Dharmadam Island: Located just off the beach, this small, lush island can be accessed during low tide by walking through shallow water. • Thalassery Fort: A historical landmark situated a short drive away, it offers insight into the colonial history of the region. • Kannur City: Known for its cultural heritage, Kannur has several temples, museums, and markets to explore.

This place can be reached by travelling about 15km from Kannur in Kerala. This beach is hardly 1.5km from the National Highway. The speciality is one can drive through the beach. Being monsoon the beach was shortened. So there was not much vehicles. So a few fishermen fishing with nets. The catch of the day was crabs. I asked whether it was planned or... They replied that the plan was for fish. But it's worth a fine catch because crabs are sold at about Rs.200/kg.If you are driving to Kannur do not miss this place. It's an experience that you'll cherish for a long time. The best time to visit the beach is during morning or evening if you want to enjoy both the sunrise/sunset and driving. The sand in the beach here is almost as hard as concrete which allows you to drive. You can drive for about 5-6 kms along the stretch with fresh sea breeze hitting your face and company to you along your drive. The beach is usually crowded with children and adults alike most of them playing so drive very slowly and carefully. Caution: Do not try to drive at night, you may not realize and drive into the sea. Also the roads leading to and from the beach are very narrow and navigating them becomes a challenge. Before you enter the beach for a drive, do get out of your car to check whether it's safe to drive. If the sea is rough it may be closedIt was first time we went to drive in beach and believe me it was amazing experience. The beach is quite big so one can find quieter place easily, you just have to drive little. It's quite clean beach there are small moving shops to sell few things on the beach. We were aware that salt water damages the car but still how can one hold themselves w/o driving and splashing water all over. It was fun. There is some entry fee which is very nominal. When we were there is was not crowded but seen reviews which says it gets crowded on holidays so plan accordingly. Overall it was great experience and everyone should visit this beach and have experience...
