Pandavan Paara — Attraction in Kerala

Shrouded in myth, the Pandavan Para, also known as Pandavan Rock, is believed to have been the hideout of the Pandavas. It is located in Urukunnu near Thenmala, 2 kilometres away from Chegannur in Alleppey. A popular picnic spot, the Pandavan Para has an ancient temple on its hilltop. Near Urukunnu, near Thenmala in Kollam district, lies a quaint picnic spot called Pandavan Para or the Rock of the Pandavas, mythical heroes of the epic Mahabharata. At the base of the great hill where one finds this pristine location, lies a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Here one can enjoy the views from different angles of Thenmala including the adjoining hills, forests, the Kallada dam and the lake behind it and the railway line that passes by the mountain bases and over arched stone bridges. Offers panaromic view of Thenmala, this being the highest point around. You can see Thenamala dam+ reservoir and river on one side and rail line on the other side. At the top there is a small temple at the hill top and a Cross✝️ a little below.

One needs to walk up through a plight of stairs and then rocks. It might take anywhere between 20-45 minutes. Early mornings are advisable since the whole valley will be filled in fog and you see it as a white river flowing below.

Climbing the hill is a workout but when you reach the top worth the view and breezy atmosphere. I was lucky enough to visit the spot in a windy climate.
