Here is the best choice : Paniyeli Poru, located in the outskirts of Kochi, Kerala. Paniyeli Poru is a little known tourist spot in the banks of River Periyar, which provides a unique experience to you with its lovely dense forest, soothing chirping of birds, scenic banks of the river with crystal clear water and small-small milky waterfalls.
Landscape: The main feature of this place is its affluent beauty of nature with lush green forest, serene river banks, natural waterfalls, the milky streams between the rocks and the far view of the mountains in the background. One can sit and relax at the calm and refreshing river bank, listening the fluttering of river and enjoying the cool breeze which purifies the mind and soul as well. The place is also one of the best trekking picnic spot too.
Precautions: Despite the mystic beauty of the river, the water here is a risky trap too. The tranquil river with calm water at the top contains deep and very strong under water currents. The slippery rocks and the gap between the rocks are tricky dangerous traps. So it is advisable to sit on the banks and enjoy the cool and refreshing nature. At paniyeli poru and nearby locality, there are only few hotels or shops so you have to carry enough food and water. As this place is an eco friendly forest reserve, food items and plastic objects are not allowed from the entry gate.
Best Visiting time: The best time to visit is December – May, as the water flow level will decrease and you can step into the rocks and can have a closer view of the panoramic waterfalls. Usually there will be a little rush in summer holidays and weekends.

Read moreCANNOT SEE THE RAPIDS ALL THROUGH OUT THE YEAR!! ONLY WHEN DAM SHUTTERS CLOSE (AFTER DECEMBER.)
I would love to rate it higher but the overall staff behaviour and their attitude just didn't help the people visiting this place.. First of all its more accessible by own vehicles, public transport will leave you around 1.5 km away, from where taking an auto wont always be feasible as there are hardly any autos there- YOU WILL HAVE TO WALK.So better visit this place along with some other tourist spots near by and opt to come by your own vehicle.
Secondly these rapids are not accessible all throughout the year - it makes sense as they usually place temporary bamboo Bridges over the rocks and the periyar river which flows from Boodhathan kettu Dam, and we navigate through them to view the rapids. So during heavy rainfalls -July, August or post the monsoon season till around December the bridges are removed as the waterflow and the water level may rise at anytime depending on the shutters open in the dam👍🏻 Good decision.. BUT WHY CANT THE AUTHOROTIES AT THE TICKET COUNTER NOTIFY THE VISITORS ABOUT THIS? Ofcourse there was a small piece of printed paper stuck somewhere near the ticket counter, but when ticket rates can be printed in BIG FONT SIZE at different entry booths, such information can also be printed in BIG FONT SIZE so that its easily visible or otherwise there is no harm in informing the visitor before they buy the ticket🤷🏻♂️.. To be honest they are like we have to do the research before coming and they are not responsible ☹️.. Anyways ticket costs Rs 50..NO CASH ACCEPTED.. ONLY ONLINE PAYMENT.. earlier it was the opposite😂.. Dear authorities..accept both.. What is the harm? Cash is always the King.. Online payment mode some times may be hindered due to network issues..
Lavatory facilities are poor👎🏻 clogged sinks and poorly swept floors.. Only one canteen inside not recommended. 🙄
When rapids are not accessible, tickets cost the same but you can view it only from a long distance and the guides there will tell you the story as to why we cant cross the river which actually needed to be told at the entry🙄 ( POST THAT HONEST GUIDE AT...
