Read moreThe phantom rock is a natural rock formation at the top of the hills. The formation shows the shape of a human head and that is where it derives its name from. The vehicle can be taken to the top, where there is plenty of space to park.
The view from the top is fantastic. On one side, you can see the main road and, beyond it, the entire expanse of mountains between which you can also see some part of the backwaters from the Karapuzha Dam. In summer, it tends to get too hot sometimes at the top, but in winter, the view is absolutely gorgeous with almost no heat. On the right side, you can see the phantom rock with the top part looking like a human head. Though natural formation, it is incredible to see.
On the other side, there is another rock formation, though not really resembling a head. Then, you can see the vast expanse of the forest, similar to a lush green carpet. The view would have been relaxing during the rain. There is also a shed-like structure created where standing, you can still feel some cool breeze blowing. Thus, the place is impressive overall, and you can see the entire stretch of nature...

This point is on the way to Ambalavayal, on the main road you have to enter a private road(stone crusher vehicles move around). Such a heritage site on which they market wayanad tourism. There is a stone crusher which is fully operational around the area. I wonder if the govt department even has spine. Wayanad has been messed up big time. What ever little they have is being squeezed to the core. It's a dusty place with lot of noise from the machines and vehicles. It's sad to see so much of rock has been quarried from the spot.
Around this rock we spotted people consuming alcohol and even few chaps smoking marijuana (ganja). Considering all these things I would suggest drop the idea if you plan a visit with family.
As mentioned by every one It's a nice place. Single rock and it's moderately tough to climb the phantom cliff but going on the extreme top is extremely diffcult and not possible. You will need harness.
There is no landmark or even proper sign board to...
