Pothundi Dam, located approximately 42 kilometers from Palakkad town in Kerala, India, is a remarkable 19th-century engineering feat. Constructed across the Meenichiladipuzha and Padipuzha rivers, this earthen dam stands out for its unique construction technique, utilizing a mixture of jaggery and quick lime instead of conventional concrete—a testament to the ingenuity of its builders.

Serving as a crucial irrigation source, Pothundi Dam supports agricultural activities across 5,470 hectares in the Palakkad district and supplies drinking water to the Nemmara, Ayalur, and Melarcode panchayats. The reservoir, covering an area of 30 square kilometers, is nestled at the foothills of the scenic Nelliyampathy Hills, offering visitors a tranquil retreat amidst nature.

The dam’s surroundings have been developed into a popular picnic spot, featuring well-maintained gardens and boating facilities that allow visitors to enjoy the serene waters and picturesque landscape. The panoramic views of the Nelliyampathy mountain range from the dam are particularly captivating, making it a favored stopover for travelers en route to the hill station.

For those planning a visit, it’s advisable to check the local weather conditions, as the region can experience high temperatures. Carrying essentials like water and sun protection can enhance the comfort of your trip. Whether you’re a history enthusiast intrigued by ancient engineering, a nature lover seeking scenic beauty, or simply looking for a peaceful spot to unwind, Pothundi Dam offers a blend of cultural heritage and natural splendor that is sure to enrich your...

This is a beautiful place at the lap of Nelliyampathy Hill ranges. The reflecting images of the hills in the water of this reservoir and the soothing breeze is an experience in life for the visitor. Its a location to refresh and rejuvenate before you start the ascent to the high hills. the garden attached to the dam is getting small makeovers. Though with lot of potential you end up with a feeling that it is being neglected. The artifacts are well thought off but not maintained. Despite these its certainly is a relief for the urban travelers. Students will find it very useful to be here. Its good to travel with an umbrella useful in both rainy season and summer. There is a temple nearby which is so serene and soul satisfying. The road to Pothundi from Nemmara is very picturesque. the valley below the dam agriculture fields are very impressive. This is well accessible from nearby Town Nemmara where most amenities are available like restaurants, hospital, banks, ATMs, taxis and shops. Its worth a visit specially when we think of natural scenic beauty and the rich flora and vegetation. As a regulation you need to enter details at the forest check gate. The staff there are courteous. There is an ecoshop if you are interested to have any memento. In a nutshell its a treat to the eyes and make us...

The dam is located en route to Nelliyampathy Hills. A beautifully landscaped, well-maintained dam garden beckons visitors at the entrance. With a plethora of rides and manicured trees and plants, the garden is built to provide happiness to children and elders alike. Spanning the garden will take one to the toe of the dam. The steps to the crest of the dam might look strenuous, but it’s worth the effort. A stunning view of Nelliyampathy Hills awaits visitors at the top. Take a stroll along the crest to get a panoramic view of the reservoir in the backdrop of the hills on one side and green paddy fields...
