Review of Urakkuzhi Waterfalls, Kakkayam A Hidden Gem Worth the Journey Urakkuzhi Waterfalls, nestled within the picturesque Kakkayam forest near the Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary, is truly a unique and rewarding experience for nature lovers. Unlike many waterfalls that offer a clear, wide-angle view, Urakkuzhi is a hidden gem that reveals its beauty only up close. As the name suggests, "Urakkuzhi" (meaning "barrel pit" in Malayalam) refers to the way the water has carved out deep, barrel-shaped holes in the rocks, making an unobstructed view from a distance impossible. This is precisely what makes the falls so intriguing—it's a waterfall you mostly hear and then discover. The journey to the falls is an adventure in itself. Starting from the Kakkayam Dam, you embark on a trek through the dense forest. The path is well-maintained, but it's important to be prepared for the natural environment, which can include leeches, especially during the monsoon season. The walk is peaceful and immersive, offering a chance to appreciate the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats. A major highlight of the visit is the presence of the friendly and knowledgeable forest guards. They are not just there for security; they serve as guides, offering valuable insights into the local ecosystem and the history of the area. Their guidance makes the trek safer and more informative. Their helpfulness and warm demeanor add a personal touch to the experience, making you feel welcome and cared for in this beautiful, wild landscape. While the view of the main cascade is limited, the experience is about more than just the visual. It's about the sound of the powerful water, the coolness of the air, and the feeling of being deep within a pristine forest. The area is tranquil and untouched, a perfect escape from city life. Key Points to Note: Accessibility: A 1-2 km trek is required from the dam area to reach the falls. While the path is mostly flat, the last few meters can be a bit challenging. Best Time to Visit: The waterfall is at its most spectacular during and just after the monsoon season (June to December) when the water flow is strongest. Forest Guards: The presence of friendly and informative forest guards is a huge plus, enhancing both safety and the overall experience. Limited View: As mentioned, you cannot see the full cascade from a single vantage point. The view is limited due to the unique rock formations. Nearby Attractions: The Kakkayam Dam itself offers boating opportunities and stunning scenic views, making the trip a comprehensive day out. In conclusion, Urakkuzhi Waterfalls is not your typical tourist destination. It's an experience for those who appreciate the raw, unfiltered beauty of nature and are willing to go on a small trek to find it. The limited view from the outside is a testament to its wild, untamed nature, and the helpfulness of the forest guards makes the journey all the...

The rocks in the waterfall has holes as in an ural deep enough to fit a human. So if someone slips from the waterfall he can fall into either one of these holes or at deep place below the waterfall making it impossible to find them. So no search and rescue operation will be done at all. Making this one of the most dangerous waterfalls.
