Vellanikal a 5 acre rock bed hillok, is istuated in Pothencode panchayath (ward Manalakaram), 4km away from Santhigiri Ashram. The location is known as Paramukal, Thonnackal Harijan Colony comprising of 512 acre of land donated to 180SC familes by the GOK ''I love you so much that I won't forget you even if I die," says an estranged lover on the wall of this hilltop temple. For nature lovers, Vellanickal, a verdant hilltop, is the perfect spot to be. The road to Vellanickal goes via rubber plantations and the terrain is quite rough and proves a challenge to both driver and vehicle. I reached the hilltop as the sun was setting. The vast stretch of hills and valleys are enveloped with an orange shawl and the clouds dotted with tints of gold. Birds that were patrolling their valley have gone to roost. Vellanickal is not for revellers. It is a place for quiet meditation as you watch the sun sink in the western horizon. The mercury dips perceptibly and the cool breeze gives it the feel of a hill station. The view is picture perfect as darkness gradually envelopes the valley. Away from the crowds Surprisingly there aren't any visitors around as I stretch out on top of a rock to watch the distant horizon. The hilltop temple, called paramukal kovil (hilltop temple) is dedicated to Thampuran. It is, however, open only on Fridays. It is advisable to visit the place in large groups as the place is rather remote. As the sky darkens and mist enfolds the hilltop and temple, I reluctantly decide to begin the return journey. As I take a final look at the place, the words of the estranged lover come back and I whisper, "I love you so much that I won't forget you even if I die." How to get there There are two ways to reach Vellanickal. Drive straight to 16th mile near Thonnakkal on the National highway. It is 25 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram. Turn right and drive 2 kilometres to reach Vengode. Vellanickal is 3 kilometres away from Vengode. The second way to reach Vellanickal is via Pothencode, which is 20 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram. Drive 3 kilometres from Pothencode to reach Koliacode. Turn left and drive 4 kilometres from Koliacode to reach Vellanickal.

Review: Vellanikkal Kallu Viewpoint, Pothencode

Located just about 2 km from Pothencode Junction/Bus Stand, Vellanikkal Kallu is a small but impressive viewpoint in the Pothencode Panchayath. The road leading up is not in great shape—mostly broken stretches—but the short ride takes you through rubber estates and small farms, adding to the rustic charm.

At the top, visitors are rewarded with a 360° panoramic view of Trivandrum city. Both sunrise and sunset are spectacular, making this a perfect spot for photographers and nature lovers.

The site has some basic facilities:

A small tea shop serving snacks and drinks.

An upper viewpoint area for an even better view.

A toilet (functional but not well maintained).

Free and ample parking, which is convenient for families and groups.

That said, cleanliness is a big issue. The area is scattered with plastic waste and lacks proper upkeep. This takes away from the otherwise beautiful setting.

Pros

Close to Pothencode town (only 2 km away).

Free, spacious parking.

Tea shop and basic toilet facility available.

360° view of Trivandrum, especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset.

Cons

Poor road conditions on the way up.

Litter and lack of proper maintenance.

Toilet facility needs better upkeep.

Verdict

Vellanikkal Kallu is a hidden gem with huge potential. With proper maintenance and eco-friendly measures, it could become a must-visit attraction for Trivandrum and Kerala tourism. For now, it’s a peaceful local spot where you can enjoy stunning views, provided you don’t mind the rough approach and lack of...

If you're looking for a quick escape into nature without venturing too far from the city, Vellanikkal Para Viewpoint is a hidden gem just 15 kilometres from the Techno Park campus in Trivandrum. Nestled amidst rolling hills and dense greenery, this spot offers one of the most majestic sunset views you’ll find in the region. As the sun dips below the horizon, it paints the sky in fiery hues of orange and gold, casting a magical glow over the lush landscape. Evenings here are particularly refreshing, with a cool, gentle breeze that makes the short trek to the viewpoint completely worth it. Post-monsoon, the surrounding valleys come alive in vibrant green, making the view even more breathtaking. It’s a great place to simply sit back, breathe in the fresh air, and soak in the serenity with friends or loved ones. However, the experience does come with a few disappointments. Despite government efforts to maintain the area — including providing adequate garbage bins — many visitors unfortunately choose to litter the site with plastic bottles, wrappers, and other waste. It dampens the natural charm and is disheartening to see. Additionally, the pathway lights have been vandalized, which can make returning after sunset a bit risky. Overall, Vellanikkal Para is a peaceful and picturesque spot, perfect for a spontaneous nature break. A little more responsibility from visitors and maintenance from authorities could truly elevate this viewpoint into one of Trivandrum’s best natural retreats.
