If you are visiting Lonar Lake, the only known hyper-velocity impact crater in basaltic rock on Earth, you should not miss the Kamalja Devi Temple, located beside the lake. The temple is dedicated to Kamalja Devi, an avatar of Goddess Lakshmi, who is believed to have appeared here as a self-manifested idol. The temple is also known as Padmavati Temple, and features carved images of various deities.
The temple is situated above the water level of the lake, which changes according to the seasons. The temple offers a peaceful and scenic view of the lake and its surroundings. You can also spot many migratory and local birds near the temple, such as shelduck, black-winged stilts, brahminy ducks, red-wattled lapwings, blue jays, bayaweavers, hoopoes, barn owls, golden oriole, larks, tailorbirds, parakeet and peafowl.
The temple is one of the many ancient temples around Lonar Lake, which testify to the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region. The most significant temple is the Daitya Sudan Temple in Lonar town, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who killed the demon Lonasura, after whom the lake is named.
