Kundar came into prominence after a chief of Khangars Khet Singh decided to build his capital here, in 1180s AD. He captured the fortress of Jinagarh from Chandelas, which was located here, and established his own state. After his death his grandson Maharaja Khub Singh Khangar built a splendid fort in place of Jinagarh fortress and named it ‘Garh Kundar’.

Garh Kundar remained as the capital of Khangar kings till its capture by Mohammad Tughlaq’s army in 1347 A.D. Later it was handed over to Bundelas, who were feudatories of Mughals.

Besides the main fort the remains of various ancient structures can be seen here. These isolated remains seem to quietly narrate the tale of the splendid past of Khangar kshtriyas. It is in the large and spacious courtyard of the fort, princess Kesar De (daughter of last Khangar king Maharaja Maan Singh) committed ‘jauhar’ (a ritual of voluntary immolation by jumping into a pool of fire, undertaken in medieval times by the kshatriya queens and princesses to save their honour from the invading enemy). A few rock and pillar inscriptions have been found in the fort, which tell us the story of Kesar De’s sacrifice.

The chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh announced a sum of rupees two crore forty three lakhs for the conservation of historical fort of Kundar during 3-day festival called "Virasat" held at the fort in...

What a magnificent fort, tucked away in the middle of nowhere! A car hire from Orchha to here cost around Rs2200. We set off at 0900 & were back my 1400 – Note we also visited Barua Sagar Fort on the way back. So four hours should see you right if you only do Garh Kundar. It's also a must do for tourists who are travelling from Orchha to Khajuraho by car. If you are visiting from Orchha, take a guide with you and bear in mind he probably won't know much about Garh Kundar, fortunately there are a couple of very helpful security guards who protect the fort and one of them came along on our tour, explained about the fort to my guide who then translated into English. There are toilets and bins around. Drinking water too (foreign tourists bring your own packaged water!) At the bottom of the hill, you might find one or two simple stalls selling snacks, but bring water just in case. Although the fort is easy to reach by steps, there are quite a lot of them! My favorite fort so far (ten trips to India).

One of the mysterious fort of India. It is now under control of "The M.P. Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1964". Entry charge - entry is free. There is nothing any charge. About the fort - It is situated in Niwari district of M.P. The fort is built at the top of a hill and has five stories, in which two are underground and three are above it. The fort is built in such a orientation that it is visible from 5 km but as one keeps on coming near to it, the fort seems to be away from sight and the main road gets diverted to any other direction. If you are planning to go there, observe as mention above and the important thing is that please keep drinking water and some food along with you because the fort is in remote area.
