बाळूमामाचा जन्म 3 ऑक्टोबर 1892 रोजी कर्नाटकातील बेळगाव जिल्ह्यातील चिक्कोडी तालुक्यातील अकोल नावाच्या गावात हिंदू कुरुबा (मेंढपाळ) कुटुंबात झाला. त्याचे वडील मयप्पा नावाचे मेंढपाळ होते आणि आईचे नाव सुंदरा होते. त्याने आपले बालपण आपल्या आई-वडिलांसोबत घालवले पण ते नेहमी ध्यानात हरवले होते.
