The present day tourist is hungry for diverse options, especially those looking for quick weekend getaway. He’s fed up going to Lonavala/Matheran/Mahabaleshwar countless times and wants to explore newer pastures, places where he can find peace and solitude. This has become difficult as tourists today seemed to have penetrated almost every inch of Maharashtra. Even places like Ganaptipule which didn’t get many tourists until 5 years ago are now attracting vacationers like a magnet. It is absolutely necessary to book your room 2 months prior to your trip during the peak season time. However, it’s good to know that even today, there are few destinations that is still devoid of the crowd of tourists. Diveagar is one such place which is still untouched by commercialization. The crowd even during the peak season isn’t much and offers noise-free and pollution-free environment. What’s more, it has a beach sprawling at least 5 kms! HOW TO REACH?Diveagar is located in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. It’s close to Harihareshwar and Shrivardhan, more popular tourist destinations, while Diveagar gets left behind. Good actually!By Road: Diveagar is approx 180 kms from Mumbai and 130 kms from Pune. In order to comfortably reach Diveagar, I strongly recommend you have the arrangement of private transport. If that is not possible, then the other option is State Transport (ST) Bus. Private buses are very few and get booked immediately. Very few ST buses ply to Diveagar and if you don’t get a seat in that, you can book a seat in the bus plying to Borli (which is just a km away from Diveagar). Now here’s a catch! There are 2 villages by the name of Borli within the radius of 50-60 kms! Neither the STwallahs nor any website on the net will tell you that. As luck would have it, we booked tickets to the other Borli (the one which was far from Diveagar) – let’s call it Borli 2! It was when we we reached Borli 2 that we realized of the goof-up. However, the conductor and the passengers guided as to how to reach Borli 1 (called by them as Borli-Diveagar). Moreover, there are very few buses going to Borli 1 and hence private transport is very much recommended!By Rail: Nearest railway station is Mangaon (30 kms approx). But it is inconvenient to reach Diveagar from there.By Air: Mumbai and Pune are the nearest airportsBEST TIME TO VISITThe locals claim that the place is worth visiting any time of the year. We visited in the sweltering May and yet it was quite pleasant during the evenings and mornings. The weather gets quite exciting during monsoons although I personally feel winters is the time when Diveagar experiences the best form of climate-cool and pristine. PLACES OF INTERESTDiveagar Beach (see pic): Easily the biggest attraction of the place. It is long, sprawling and importantly, unspoilt. The waves aren’t that strong which makes it safe for swimming and leisure. Swarnaganesh: This is what gives Diveagar a religious touch. It is a temple which houses a golden idol of Ganesh. The idol is believed to be more than 1000 years old but was found just 15 years back nearby. Photography is not allowed and is opened 12 hours a day (8am to 8pm).Shrivardhan: Located 16 kms away, it boasts of notable places like Kondivli Beach which is equally worth visiting. For the religious, Shankar Temple and Somaja Devi Temple are a must-visit while for the history buffs, Peshwa Smarak is recommended. The latter is the tomb made in memory of Peshwa Bajirao I, success of the first Peshwa, Balaji Vishwanath. Shrivardhan also offers plenty of accommodation options.Harihareshwar: Located 17 kms from Shrivardhan and 33 kms from Diveagar, this temple town is also known as ‘Dakshin Kashi’. The focus of attraction here is the Kalbhairav Temple (next to the sea shore), believed to be constructed during Shivaji’s lifetime. If you visit the temple, don’t forget to perform the Pradakshina at the rear...
