At a distance of 9 km from Saputara Bus Station and 80 km from Nashik, Hatgad Fort is an ancient fort located at Hatgad village in the Nashik district of Maharashtra near Saputara. Situated on Saputara - Nashik Road, it is a major trekking destination on the Gujarat - Maharashtra border and among the top historical places to visit as part of Saputara sightseeing packages.

Located at an altitude of 3,600 feet in the Sahyadri ranges, Hatgad Fort was built in the 17th century AD by the great Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Regarded as one of the prominent sightseeing places in Saputara, Hatgad Fort was built as a watchtower towards the Nashik area and the inner valleys of Gujarat. Officially managed and maintained by the Archeological Department of Maharashtra, this fort is a delightful destination for history buffs as well as trekkers.

A statue of Lord Ganesha is placed on the top of the fort. One can see a tombstone, a water tank, remnants of a mansion, dilapidated fort walls, and an arch-shaped structure inside the fort. The unique feature of Hatgadh is two reservoirs, named Jamuna and Ganga, which are the source of water for the villages located in the vicinity earlier. Tourists can enjoy beautiful views of the entire valley and Suragana Village from the top of the fort.

The only way to reach the fort is through trekking via a narrow rocky path. The route to the fort starts just near the Anando Restaurant in front of Club Mahindra Resort. It takes around an hour to reach the top of the fort from the parking place. It's not advisable for kids and aged people as the trek is demanding.

Hatgad Fort,

Okay, so basically when it comes to visit saputara, you have a very few options to roam around in Saputara. Hatgad Fort is one of the best tourist attraction in saputara.

Now let me come to guide you more here :

How to reach :

This fort is located 6km away from Saputara.

You'll find a road near Club Mahindra - Anando Palms Resort,

Also, you'll find most of the people from Maharashtra over there,

If you have reached to this place by your personal vehicle, you can not take your car/taxi/vehicle upside, as they have restricted this area for locals only by saputara police.

You have to take a bike on rent from the locals in order to climb that hill towards Hatgad, you can also climb it as well. Depends on one's preference.

I asked one of the guy there so he told me that they are the locals and they are taking care of tourists who are visiting this fort.

If you are taking a bike on rent, you have two options :

One, the guy will come to drop you to the top on bike (from there you have to take steps and climb upwards). Once you complete the tour on fort, call that guy and he will again come to pick you up and drop you from where you have been picked up. And the charges are Rs. 100.

Two, take the bike with you if you want to ride the bike, again the charges are same.

When you are climbing steps, please make sure you have wear good shoes/sandal with proper grip. As the steps have Algae (which is very very slippery).

Overall, its just awesome. Must visit this place if you are planning to...

Hatgad was build by yadavas and it later was strengthen by Shivaji Maharaj during 1670's to watch over Surgana ghatvaat and province as it border Mughal area down in Gujrat. The authorities at the base (where the tar road to hatgad start) has erected a check post charge per person Rs 10/- and every vehicle Rs 20/- as parking charges. The rock steps to the fort start just near the parking area. It will take somewhere around 5-10 mins to reach the top. There are 4 darwajas to reach the top. The first darwaja has a Sharab sculpture at its base along with Marathi - Devanagari shilalekha. Once you enter 3rd darwaja just climb a rock part to your left to reach a old shilalekha. It belong to Baghul raja of baglan. Once you reach the top, there is one massive water tank carved into rock to your left. There is one recently renovated shiv mandir to you right. There are 2 massive water tank near it. And one smaller rock carved water tank, which is dried. There are ruins of wada on the higher elevation beside it. There are 2 bastion ruins. It will take around 30 mins max to explore the whole fort.

Hatgadh Fort is a historical monument situated near Saputara. This fort is 3600 feet high and is situated on the borer of Gujrat and Maharashtra. The Hatgadh Fort was built by the greatest King of Marathas, Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This fort which is carved in the rocky terrain, offers an enchanting view of the Sahyadri mountains. At the highest point of the fort, you will find an idol of Lord Ganesha. The fort offers a very calm, pure and peaceful setting where you can spend a few hours with your loved ones. For trekker lovers it's a good and easy- medium trek. It will take 30-40 min to trek to the highest level. Sometimes the gate at the entrance is closed and you cannot take the car till the trek start point and you have to walk 5 min more. On the peak it's a big area where you can spend time and have photography. While I was on Trek there was another group of people who observed snakes, so be careful. Thanks 🙏
