From Vasai to Dahanu to Talasari, the district comprises a series of forts. The fort of Vasai, Kamandurg, Arnala fort, Takmak, Kohoj, Tandulwadi, Asawa, Kaldurg, Asherigad, and many other forts can be seen along the coastline and a series of interconnected hills in the region.
Kaldurg is a small hill fort located on a hill separating the Palghar and Manor region among these forts. Primarily used for surveillance and a paradise for many trekkers.
How to Reach?
Located 6.5 Km from the Palghar Railway Station. Board the MSRTC Bus heading towards Manor and get off at The Waghoba Temple which is at the base of the fort.
History :
The fort must have been built to keep a watch on the nearby Chahad Ghat. Kaldurg fort is mentioned in history as Kalmegh and Nandimal. Although there is no reference to the construction of the fort, the fort belonging to Bimb Raja of Mahim suggests it must have been built at that time or earlier.
Later the fort was controlled by the Portuguese. However, during the reign of Chhatrapti Sambhaji Maharaj, it was in the possession of the Marathas for some time after which the Portuguese reassumed command. Finally, the Marathas conquered the fort during the Vasai campaign, which lasted from 1737 to 1739.
It takes about an hour and a half to reach the topmost point of the fort.
The perimeter of the fort is very small since it was primarily used for surveillance. Water tanks and remains of rock-cut steps can be seen on the fort.

Kaldurg is a hill-fort which serves a good adventurous oneday trek for naturelovers, weekend travellers and wanderers around Mumbai.It is at a height of 1547 feet above sea level. It takes approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hrs to reach the top. One has to take a Manor tumtum rickshaw(8 seater) from palghar station westside. Get down at Waghoba devasthan temple. Here we are welcomed by the monkeys.
Waghoba temple is dedicated to a local deity and also shelters a Shivling in it. There is a handpump behind the temple from where one can see the stairs to the fort. These steps are roughly made up of stones and mud. We have to follow these steps untill we reach the top.At places where you see two ways.. just take the one which goes UPWARDS. There are two massive rock structures on the top no fortification or walls as such. Only three water storage tanks which is the only sign of the fort. We get a great view of Palghar from here..especially of Surya river.
Though history doesn't offer much information about this fort. We can atleast assume its importance as it overlooks the routes towards Wada, Manor, Palghar, Mahim-kelva. And also it is situated amidts the network of forts like Asheri, Taldulwadi, Kohoj, Vikramgad(hillforts) and kelva, Shirgaon(seaforts).
If you are around rainy season you can have a great time under the waterfall just besides the hill.
Best season: winter, monsoon. avoid while its lightening.
Suggestion: carry food and ample of water. There is a single shop at the base where snacks and tea is available. Avoid trekking alone as there are few cases where locals have misled and robbed the trekkers.So avoid entertaining strangers.
