The nature here is so beautiful, the atmosphere is so beautiful, the nature here is so beautiful, it makes you feel happy. Karnala Bird Sanctuary - A Green Escape on the Mumbai-Goa Highway Karnala Bird Sanctuary, nestled in the Panvel taluka of Raigad district along the scenic Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH 66), offers a refreshing escape from the urban hustle. As Maharashtra's first bird sanctuary, it's a popular destination for nature lovers, trekkers, and families seeking a day out amidst lush greenery. Birdwatching and Wildlife: While it's a "bird sanctuary," expectations for spotting a vast array of birds should be managed, especially during peak hours. Many visitors report seeing a limited number of birds, with monkeys being a more common sight. However, for those with patience and a keen eye, particularly during early mornings or the winter months (October to February) when migratory birds arrive, you might be lucky enough to spot species like the Ashy Minivet, three-toed Kingfisher, Malabar Lark, and various flycatchers. The sanctuary is home to over 150 resident and migratory bird species, so binoculars are highly recommended. Trekking to Karnala Fort: One of the major draws of Karnala Bird Sanctuary is the trek to the historic Karnala Fort, perched atop the hills. This easy to moderate trek is suitable for beginners and offers breathtaking panoramic views from the summit. The trail is well-maintained, though it can be slippery during the monsoon season. The climb typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the fort, where you can explore the ruins and enjoy the magnificent vistas of the surrounding Sahyadri hills, including distant views of forts like Prabalgad and Matheran on clear days. Overall Ambiance and Facilities: The sanctuary is generally well-maintained and clean, providing a pleasant environment for walks and picnics. There are clear walking paths and a variety of plant species to admire. While some reviews mention limited food and water availability inside, especially higher up the trek, there are small canteens near the entrance offering basic snacks and refreshments. It's advisable to carry your own water bottles and light snacks, and remember to carry your litter back with you to maintain the sanctity of the natural environment. Best Time to Visit: Monsoon (June to September): The sanctuary transforms into a lush green paradise with bubbling streams and waterfalls, offering stunning scenery. However, trails can be slippery. Winter (October to February): This is considered the best time for birdwatching as migratory birds are more abundant, and the weather is pleasant for trekking. Avoid Summer (March to May): The weather can be hot and humid, making trekking less comfortable. Accessibility and Entry: Karnala Bird Sanctuary is easily accessible via the Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH 66), about 10-12 km from Panvel city. You can reach it by car, state transport buses from Mumbai/Panvel, or by train to Panvel and then a local bus or auto-rickshaw. Timings: Generally open from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily (some sources mention till 3 PM for entry). Entry Fee: Approximately INR 35-60 per person (may vary). Additional charges apply for cameras (around INR 100-195) and trekking to the fort (around INR 60). Parking charges may also apply. Things to Keep in Mind: Beware of monkeys, do not feed them. Carry sufficient water and snacks. Wear comfortable shoes suitable for trekking. Binoculars are recommended for birdwatching. Practice responsible tourism and...

One of the calmest trekking places in New Mumbai area..very easily accessible through well connected routes.

By Train - Get down at Panvel station - Go to ST bus stand ( 5 mins walk from station) get Share Taxi ( Omni) from there to Karnala Bird sanctuary ( 30 Rs per head) or if you wanna take there are rickshaws available for hire would take 250 to 350 per Auto.

Start early in the morning during weekends to have surreal experience of the misty mountain also specially to avoid huge crowd which starts to jam the trekking path later.

Weekdays you can plan as per convenience as there will be no crowd as such. But starting early is always good to get good experience .

You can carry water and snacks ( you have to show everything at gate that what are you carrying,) They will have account of plastic packing, plastic water bottles and all while returning you have to again show that you have returned the same or else you have to pay fine.

Entry ticket is 60 per person. Parking for two wheeler is 30 per bike. Camera charges ( DSLR) - 200 per camera

There are few changing rooms and toilet facilities available before starting trek.

Avoid light colors and fragile cloths . Don't wear soft footwear or slippery ones...due to monsoon trekking path is very slippery which could lead to frequent falls on ground if you don't wear something which has grip on bottom.

It's 2.5 to 3 hours trek to top based on experience and personal capacity it may changes . Take rest for 5-10 mins while climbing up after 30 mins which will help you get the fresh energy to climb further up. You can spend 1-2 hours on top of the Mountain..it's high windy , Misty and lush greenery during monsoon with beautiful views and good for photography.Don't forget to bring your umbrella/ raincoats if you are not good with rains.

Beware of Monkeys on the top..they are calm until if you poke them..hence not an issue.

While getting down it may be tricky cuz the same path which you have climbed might seem like a big task to get down due to the steep view in a few areas. don't worry stay low and use your hands to move in a sitting position when you feel it's required. Always hold on to something like tree roots, branches or big stones.. Your dress may get dirty during this process hence unless you don't want to ruin your attire wear something that you would not regret ruining.

While coming down you won't feel the tiredness which you faced while climbing up..but when you are almost there to reach down that time you will start to feel the pain in legs and later in hands if you are not a frequent trekker.

Your trekking is completed successfully.. kindly don't throw any garbage once you are down outside gate.

There are many restaurants close by if you want grab lunch / snacks .

Note : Don't go with kids unless if the kids cannot handle themselves or if you are sure to do the trekking with your kid on you.

Mobile network is poor throughout the trekking..but you do get signals here and there...
