A history in ruins... So sad to see such a wonderful monument is not being maintained...

Quick history The Khokhri Tombs are three large stone mausoleums located in the village of Khokari, near Murud in Maharashtra, India. They are significant historical monuments, showcasing the Indo-Saracenic architectural style. The tombs are the final resting places of three prominent rulers of the Siddi dynasty, who controlled the nearby Murud-Janjira Fort and the surrounding state. Here's a quick history: Siddi Surul Khan: The largest of the three tombs belongs to Sidi Surul Khan, who was the chief of Janjira State from 1707 to 1734. His tomb is said to have been built during his lifetime. Sidi Kasim (Yakut Khan): One of the two smaller tombs is that of Sidi Kasim, also known as Yakut Khan. He had a notable career, commanding Janjira (1670–1677), the Mughal fleet (1677–1696), and again Janjira (1696–1707). An Arabic inscription on his tomb indicates he died in 1707. Khairiyat Khan: The third tomb is that of Khairiyat Khan, the brother of Yakut Khan. He served as the administrator of Danda-Rajpuri (1670–1677) and Janjira (1677–1696). An inscription on his tomb suggests a death date of 1696. The tombs were well-maintained by the later Nawabs of Janjira, who assigned a yearly revenue from villages to ensure their upkeep. Today, they are protected monuments under the Archaeological Survey of...

The largest is the tomb of Sidi Surul Khan, who was chief of Janjira State from 1707 to 1734. One of the two smaller tombs is that of Sidi Kasim, commonly known as Yakut Khan, who was in command of Janjira (1670–1677), of the Mugal fleet (1677–1696), and again of Janjira (1696–1707). The other small tomb is of his brother Khairiyat Khan, who was in command of Danda–Rajpuri (1670–1677) and of Janjira (1677–1696). The tomb of Surul Khan is said to have been built during his lifetime. Yakut Khan's tomb has an Arabic inscription stating that he died on Thursday 30th Jama-Dilaval AH 1118 (AD 1707). Khairiyat Khan's tomb also has an inscription. The figures of the date of his death are AH 1018, but the Arabic words give the date H. 1108 (AD 1696). The latter date is believed to be the correct one. The tombs were kept in repair by the Nawab, who had assigned to the village of Savli-Mitha-gar a yearly revenue of Rs. 2,000 for the maintenance of Surul Khan's tomb, and by the village of Dodakal for the maintenance of Yakut Khan's and Khairiyat Khan's tombs. In the past, Kuran was read at these tombs on Thursday nights, on yearly death-days or when urus...

The lesser known Khokhari Tomb (Gumbad) is located very closed to the beautiful Murud Beach, Maharashtra. It is believed that Tomb was built in 12th century by the descendants of Siddis Mughal ruler. The Mughal architecture of this old massive stone tomb is superb but seems neglected by the ASI. There is no proper informative board for the visitors. The place should properly be restored by ASI/ local authorities to maintain such a amazing historical monuments. The tomb is placed on a high plateform near the seashore looks awesome. The place is calm and quiet and not crowded even on holiday. Best part is that you can have a wonderful view of sea beach from here. Good location for picture perfect and photo shoot. Must visit !!

A must visit place if you are interested in historical monuments, the main tombs are of Siddi Surul Khan and Yakut Khan who ruled in Janjira during the 17th century. There are many tombs spread across the entire property and are lying in a deserted state. It's a very peaceful place and has hardly any visitors even during weekends. The view from here is amazing as it's located right next to the beach and on a considerable height. We do see the ASI board being placed near the entry but I don't think it is being maintained or preserved in any way. Parking can be done on the street across and Google Maps will guide you for the exact location. Road conditions are not that good after Kashid Beach if coming from Alibaug.
