Mandangad fort — Attraction in Maharashtra

Mandangad Fort (also called Chitradurga Fort)[1] is about 2 km from Mandangad town in Ratnagiri District, Maharashtra. This fort is said to be constructed by King Bhoj [2]. After the Mughals lost the Battle of Umberkhind , This fort was captured by Shivaji in the battle with Adil Shah. A 400-year-old cannon is the major feature of the fort. The fort constitutes a Ganapati Temple and a tank called Thorla Talav.

History of Mandangad Overlooking the small town of Mandangad is a two-peaked hill fort also known by the same name i.e. Mandangad (also called Chitradurga fort). Mandangad fort doesn’t find much of a mention in history books. In fact, it is one of the very old forts in the region with data suggesting that Mandangad was built in the 12th century during the reign of the Shilahara dynasty. It was built by King Bhoja II. In 1661 it was under an Adilshahi Sardar(Knight) Jaswantrao Dalvi, the person who besieged Vishalgad during Shivaji Maharaj's daring escape from Panhalgad.

When Shivaji Maharaj defeated kartalabhkhan and was marching towards Dabhol, Mandangad was along the way. Hearing this news, Jaswantrao Dalvi ran away to Shingarpur and Shivaji maharaj took Mandangad without a fight. It was held by Kanhoji Angre before captured by British in 1818.

I would recommend visiting it during monsoon at noon or early in the morning when the hill is surrounded by fog. I have captured these photos after 1:00pm. It's a great place if you like to enjoy fresh, cool atmosphere and click some amazing pictures in the fog.

The fort is accessible by a road which leads right up to its gates. The fort is usually less crowded. You won't find any food stalls up there so if you're planning to spend some time there, be sure to take some water and food along with you.

मंडणगड किल्ला - रत्नागिरी :

प्राचिनकाळी छोट्या गलबतांमधून व्यापार चालत असे. अशी गलबते नदीतून खोलवर आत आणता येत. समुद्राच्या तुलनेत नदीचे पाणी स्थिर असल्यामुळे नदीच्या काठावरुन मालाची चढ उतार करणे सोपे जात असे. सावित्री नदी बाणकोट जवळ समुद्राला मिळते. या भागात नदीचे पात्र रुंद आहे. त्यामुळे प्राचिन काळी या नदीतून परदेशांशी व्यापार चालत असे. या व्यापारी मार्गाचे रक्षण करण्यासाठी बाणकोट व मंडणगड या किल्ल्यांची निर्मिती करण्यात आली होती. मंडणगड किल्ला राजा भोज याने बांधला असे म्हटले जाते. १६६१ साली हा किल्ला जसवंतराव दळवी या आदिलशहा सरदारच्या ताब्यात होता. शिवाजी राजे पन्हाळ्यात अडकुन पडले होते, तेव्हा याच दळवींनी विशाळगडाला वेढा दिला होता. उंबरखिंडीत कारतलबखानाचा पराभव केल्यावर महाराज दाभोळकडे निघाले. वाटेत मंडणगड किल्ला होता. शिवाजी महाराज येत आहेत हे समजताच जसवंतराव दळवीची तारांबळ उडाली व मंडणगड व आपली जहागिरी सोडून तो शृंगारपूरला पळून गेला. महाराजांना न लढताच हा किल्ला मिळाला. काही काळ हा किल्ला सिध्दी व नंतर आंग्य्रांकडे होता. १८१८ साली इंग्रजांनी तो जिंकला.

गडावर पाहण्यासाठी ठिकाणे: मंडणगड किल्ला दोन शिखरांचा आहे. उजव्याबाजूकडील थोड्याश्या उंच शिखरावर फक्त एक पाण्याच टाक पहाता येते. डाव्या बाजूकडील काहीशा सपाट शिखरावर किल्ला आहे. किल्ल्याचे प्रवेशद्वार अस्तित्वात नाही, पण त्याच्या बाजूचे बुरुज अजून उभे आहेत. गडावर दोन पाण्याचे तलाव आहेत. गडाची तटबंदी काही ठिकाणी शाबूत आहे. गडावर गणेशाचे जिर्णोध्दारीत मंदिर आहे. गडावरुन सावित्री नदीचे पात्र, रायगड, व वरंधा घाट स्वच्छ...
