The Pohale Caves, also known as Pohala or Pawala Caves, are a fascinating yet lesser-known historical site located approximately 15 km northeast of Kolhapur, en route to the revered Jyotiba Temple. These ancient rock-cut caves date back to the 7th century AD and were originally part of a Buddhist monastery complex. Over time, they have evolved into a unique blend of spiritual and natural elements, offering visitors a serene and contemplative experience.

The cave complex comprises several chambers, including a large vihara (monastic hall) measuring about 34 feet square, with 14 columns on three sides and 22 cells surrounding the central hall. There is also a chaitya (prayer hall) and another cave featuring a raised rock-cut seat for a teacher, along with a water cistern. In the innermost chamber, a Shivlinga and Nandi have been installed, transforming part of the Buddhist site into a Shiva temple, reflecting the region's rich tapestry of religious history.

One of the most striking aspects of the Pohale Caves is the presence of numerous bats inhabiting the darker recesses of the caves. While this adds to the caves' natural ambiance, visitors should be prepared for the strong smell and the occasional fluttering of wings overhead. Additionally, during the monsoon season, the caves can become waterlogged, making access challenging and potentially hazardous. Therefore, the post-monsoon period is considered the best time to visit, when the surrounding landscape is lush and the caves are more accessible

Beyond their historical and spiritual significance, the Pohale Caves are nestled amidst verdant surroundings that are a haven for birdwatchers. Species such as peacocks, doves, hornbills, parakeets, Indian green bee-eaters, and white-throated kingfishers are commonly spotted in the area, making it a delightful spot for nature enthusiasts.

Visitor Tips:

Footwear: Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes suitable for uneven and potentially slippery terrain.

Timing: Plan your visit during daylight hours, preferably in the post-monsoon season, to ensure safer and more comfortable exploration.

Equipment: Carry a flashlight to navigate the darker sections of the caves.

Health Precautions: Be cautious of the bats and consider wearing a mask if you're sensitive to strong odors.

Weather Awareness: Avoid visiting during heavy rains due to the risk of flooding within the caves.

In summary, the Pohale Caves offer a unique confluence of ancient history, spiritual significance, and natural beauty. While they may not be as polished or well-known as other tourist destinations, their raw and untouched charm provides a rewarding experience for those willing to venture off the...

Very ancient and old place near to the Pohale village.. 12-15 kms from kolhapur. Very silent place to spend quality time.. This is cave carved in single stone of a mountain.. The structure seems like made for meditation because there are couple of small rooms and one big room. And there is one Shiv Linga in one cave.. Place is very neat and clean and I request you all to keep it clean.. Most preferred season to visit is spring season.. If you are going on bike you can take it till the place but if you are going in car then you'll need to walk for 200-300 meters to reach the place.. The only thing I didn't like is guard. There was one man present pretending that he is a guard but I don't see any uniform or ID with him and he was telling people not stop for long time even though there were only 6-7 people...

Pohale Pandav Leni Caves is a Buddhist Archaeological Site. These caves carved in laterite rock, which are of Buddhist origin, locally called as ‘Pandavleni’. ‘Leni’ is a Marathi word meaning ‘cave’.

There are two main caves; one of them is supported to have been the school and other the chapel or Chaitya. There are two rock-cut water cisterns and still in use. These caves are carved in five sections in a half round shape and a well decorated roof (Plate 1). Good place to hike while you see good Budhist cave which seems 2K years old. Most of the caves of Maharashtra seems to be as old as 600-1200 AD period but this seems oldest dating Ashoka's period ( As per mentioned by Archeological department) very small and compact cave system of 8- 10 caves with self sufficient in basic needs of that era. In rainy season small waterfall runs over the caves. It is bit slippery so in rainy season one should take care. Caves are maintained by Archaeology department so you find guard specifically on holidays and Sundays.

If you want peace just visit this place and sit there peacefully😇 If you're taking bike then it is very easy to reach but if you have car you have to park it on main road and walk 200 to 300 meters. It's such a nice and clean place so try to keep it as it is. I'll suggest to take bike to this place just enjoy Phohale(Alate) Ghat roads. Early mansoon or end mansoon will be good time to visit. You have many options to stay near this place. Just take help of Google to find perfect place for you🙃
