The Shirgaon fort was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century AD for controlling maritime activity in northern Konkan. In 1737 AD Chimajiappa Brother of Peshwa Bajirao 1, attacked Portuguese territory in northern Konkan, Maratha army sieged this fort, In December 1737 Portuguese Governor Pedro Damel destroyed this siege. Due to the heavy loss of manpower Marathas had to flee. According to Portuguese records, there were 40 bodies which Marathas could not take back. Maratha nobleman Prataprao also lost his life in this battle. However, after persistent efforts, Marathas captured the fort on 9th January 1739. This fort was used by the Marathas after they expelled the Portuguese rule from northern Konkan. A few modifications took place in this fort a meghdambari was constructed on the northeast bastion and construction of well alteration in the entry door. In 1818 A.D. the fort fell into the hands of the British. The main fort is rectangular in plan having a projection on the northern wall for the entrance tower. Another additional fortification wall of less height is provided on the western side On plan, the main fort has residential structures on the northern and western sides. These are the main characteristics of this fort. Shirgaon Fort is of extraordinary significance as it is in a reasonable state of preservation and clearly demonstrates the alterations carried out by the Marathas.

Shirgaon fort is Bhuikot type fort located at the sea shore of Shirgaon in palghar district which 98 km away from Thane. The fort is built by Yadavas of Devgiri, later on invaded by Portuguese in 15th century. During Chimaji Appa’s ( younger brother of Bajirao peshwa) conquest of vasai in 1739 this fort came under Maratha empire 🚩 To reach this place from thane by public transport: Take MSRTC bus ( Shivshahi ac bus also available ₹210) to Palghar (req 3 hrs) walk 5 minutes towards Palghar railway station take another ST of satpati till masjid chowk (₹10, 20 minutes) in hardly 5 minutes of walk you will reach to Fort site. Sharing 6 seaters also available (₹20/pp) Another way by local train: reach to Borivali/Vasai rd railway station on western line catch train to Dahanu till Palghar (₹20/pp, 1hr, limited frequency). If personal/pvt vehicle then follow google map till Palghar via fountain > vasai > Manor from Thane. Few diva-vasai railways also runs but frequency iz very low. The fortification is mixture of Yadav, Portuguese and Maratha architecture though remains are not in good condition but one time visit is worth! No car parking available, no entry fees, moderate crowd (most of them visit for photoshoots)

A small costal defence fort near shirgaon beach in Palghar. This fort is still intact compared to other forts in this region as it was actively used by all its owners. It was built long back but as all forts near vasai where won by Portugese it has also gone through their hands and was fortified again ,it's rectangular in dimensions with four bastions to gaurd the fort and one more is there at the entrance. You can still find some old cannons here in good condition. This fort after Portuguese fall, went into hands of Marathas and finally it was under Britishers. This fort is part of the bloody wars for the control of costal line along the konkan belt. It has seen many bloody wars , though it's a small fort but still it's part of our history and heritage. Do visit with your family and youn kids , enjoy the fort and the beach ! People normally come here for photo shoots as it has both fort and beach nearby, compared to other places the crowd here limited and only on weekends you see the crowd. There are no toilets around this place so mind it before planning a day out hang out at this spot, you will get few things to eat here as few locals shops and hawkers are there but no fancy hotels.
