Hiranyakeshi Temple Amboli Sacred to goddess Parvati, Hiranyakeshi Temple is the point from where Hiranyakeshi river originates. In the main sanctum of the temple, there is an idol of Devi Hiranyakeshi (a form of Goddess Parvati) with golden hair and self-manifested red color Shivling called as Hiranyakeshwar. The lingam is not visible as an another Shivling, which is used for daily offerings and prayers, is overshadowing it. The temple is located amidst the lush forest but reaching here is not a problem as there are well-built roads. Adjacent to the temple, there is a cave, which is said to be the point where the Hiranyakeshi river originates. Water rushes out with tremendous force to fall into a ‘Kund’ (tank), from where it further flows out. THINGS TO DO & SEE IN AND AROUND Found of fishing? Then Hiranyakeshi river can be a good option. Also one can visit cave temple, which is quite close. Shilpagram Artist Village in Sawantwadi, Yashwantgad Fort in Vengurla, Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary in Kolhapur, and Sawantwadi Palace in Sindhudurg are other close places to visit nearby the temple. GETTING THERE Hiranyakeshi Temple is 5 kilometers from the main bus stand in Amboli. Taxis are easily available from Amboli to visit the temple

The Hiranyakeshi River originates from a serene and spiritually significant place nestled in the lush greenery of Amboli, Maharashtra. This sacred spot is marked by a small yet vibrant temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati, known locally as the Hiranyakeshi Temple. Surrounded by dense forest and often blanketed in mist, the atmosphere here is peaceful, refreshing, and spiritually uplifting. The temple is believed to be the origin point of the Hiranyakeshi River, which emerges from a natural spring inside a cave-like structure within the temple premises. Visiting this place feels like stepping into a hidden paradise. The sound of flowing water, chirping birds, and the fresh, cool breeze create a magical experience. It’s an ideal place for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking a tranquil spiritual retreat. The temple architecture, though simple, holds a unique charm with its bright colors and serene surroundings. The path leading to the temple is surrounded by thick vegetation, adding to the mystique of the location. Overall, the origin of the Hiranyakeshi River is not just a natural wonder, but also a divine place worth visiting. It’s a perfect blend of nature, spirituality, and peace—truly a hidden gem of the Western Ghats.

Amboli lies in the Sahayadri Hills of Western India, one of the world's "Eco Hot-Spots"[citation needed] and it abounds in unusual flora and fauna. However, as in the other parts of the Sahaydri Hills, denudation of the forest cover and unregulated government-assisted development are gradually ruining a once-pristine environment.[original research?] Historically, Amboli village came into being as one of the staging posts along the road from Vengurla port to the city of Belgaum, which was extensively used by the British to supply their garrisons in south and central India. The source of the Hiranyakeshi river lies in the hills around Amboli village, and an ancient Shiva temple (called Hiranyakeshwar) sits at the cave where the water emerges.[citation needed] The main attraction for tourists is the incredibly-high rainfall (7 m average, per year) and the numerous waterfalls and mist during the monsoons. Legend has it that there are 108 Shiva temples in and around Amboli, of which only a dozen have been uncovered, one as recently as 2005.
