History : Sondai Fort, located near Karjat in Maharashtra, is a hidden gem among the lesser-known forts of the Sahyadris. Perched at a height of around 1,200 feet, it is a relatively small fort but offers big rewards in terms of scenic beauty and peaceful surroundings. The fort is named after the local deity “Sondai Devi,” whose idol is placed on the top and worshipped by villagers. The climb is not very difficult, making it an excellent choice for beginners and families who want to experience trekking without too much strain.
The trek usually takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the summit. Along the way, trekkers pass through rustic villages, green fields, and rocky patches that bring out the raw charm of the Sahyadri ranges. During the monsoon, the trail becomes even more enchanting with waterfalls, lush greenery, and cool breezes, making it a refreshing escape from the city’s routine. From the top, one can enjoy stunning panoramic views of nearby forts like Morbe Dam, Karnala, Prabalgad, Irshalgad, and Rajmachi, along with beautiful valleys and mountain ranges.
What makes Sondai Fort special is its simplicity and serenity. Unlike crowded tourist spots, it offers a tranquil atmosphere where visitors can connect with nature, enjoy photography, and soak in the peaceful vibes. After the triumph of Rajgad and Korigad, our trekking group embarked on a new adventure to Sondai Fort on August 25th. With a moderate** level of difficulty, this trek promised to be a thrilling experience.
As we gathered at the base, the rain poured down, and the muddy paths lay before us like a challenge. But we were determined to reach the top! We hired a guide, we began our ascent at 10:34 am.
The climb was a test of stamina, persistence, and teamwork. We helped each other navigate the treacherous paths, and the young ones learned valuable lessons about resilience. Meanwhile, the seniors drew motivation from overcoming each obstacle.
As we ascended higher, the breathtaking views unfolded before us – lush green valleys, soothing fog, and the thrill of discovery. Team members encouraging words, "Bas Thoda hi bakki hai, almost pohanch Gaye hai" (We're almost there, just a bit more!), kept us going.
Finally, after a thrilling climb, we reached the top, beaming with pride and a sense of accomplishment. We bowed in reverence before Sondai Mata and other deities, seeking their blessings for our journey.
But the adventure didn't end there! We proceeded to indulge in a rejuvenating experience – a mesmerizing waterfall that doubled as a natural massage therapy. It was the cherry on top, leaving us feeling truly fulfilled and content.
Our Sondai Fort trek was a testament to the power of teamwork, determination, and the great outdoors. Until the...
