History : Sondai Fort, located near Karjat in Maharashtra, is a hidden gem among the lesser-known forts of the Sahyadris. Perched at a height of around 1,200 feet, it is a relatively small fort but offers big rewards in terms of scenic beauty and peaceful surroundings. The fort is named after the local deity “Sondai Devi,” whose idol is placed on the top and worshipped by villagers. The climb is not very difficult, making it an excellent choice for beginners and families who want to experience trekking without too much strain.

The trek usually takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the summit. Along the way, trekkers pass through rustic villages, green fields, and rocky patches that bring out the raw charm of the Sahyadri ranges. During the monsoon, the trail becomes even more enchanting with waterfalls, lush greenery, and cool breezes, making it a refreshing escape from the city’s routine. From the top, one can enjoy stunning panoramic views of nearby forts like Morbe Dam, Karnala, Prabalgad, Irshalgad, and Rajmachi, along with beautiful valleys and mountain ranges.

What makes Sondai Fort special is its simplicity and serenity. Unlike crowded tourist spots, it offers a tranquil atmosphere where visitors can connect with nature, enjoy photography, and soak in the peaceful vibes. The presence of water cisterns and the small temple at the top adds cultural significance to the site. For anyone seeking a short, easy, and rewarding trek near Mumbai and Pune, Sondai Fort is truly a delightful...

Conquering Sondai Fort: A Rainy Trek to Remember

After the triumph of Rajgad and Korigad, our trekking group embarked on a new adventure to Sondai Fort on August 25th. With a moderate** level of difficulty, this trek promised to be a thrilling experience.

As we gathered at the base, the rain poured down, and the muddy paths lay before us like a challenge. But we were determined to reach the top! We hired a guide, we began our ascent at 10:34 am.

The climb was a test of stamina, persistence, and teamwork. We helped each other navigate the treacherous paths, and the young ones learned valuable lessons about resilience. Meanwhile, the seniors drew motivation from overcoming each obstacle.

As we ascended higher, the breathtaking views unfolded before us – lush green valleys, soothing fog, and the thrill of discovery. Team members encouraging words, "Bas Thoda hi bakki hai, almost pohanch Gaye hai" (We're almost there, just a bit more!), kept us going.

Finally, after a thrilling climb, we reached the top, beaming with pride and a sense of accomplishment. We bowed in reverence before Sondai Mata and other deities, seeking their blessings for our journey.

But the adventure didn't end there! We proceeded to indulge in a rejuvenating experience – a mesmerizing waterfall that doubled as a natural massage therapy. It was the cherry on top, leaving us feeling truly fulfilled and content.

Our Sondai Fort trek was a testament to the power of teamwork, determination, and the great outdoors. Until the...

Paradise for beginners who wish to Trek. Ascent is steep but achievable even for mid aged healthy ones under expert guidance.

The base village from where the trekking starts is called Sondewadi and the fort itself is known as Sondai Fort.

The nearest railway station is Karjat which is about 12 Kms away.

The Approximate Elevation of the Fort Summit is about 1200 feet above the sea level and the difficulty level is Medium.

The path is rocky while enroute to the Sondai Fort Summit one can be rejoiced by the beautiful views of Morbe Dam, Prabalgad, Irshalgad, Rajmachi, Songiri Forts, Karnala Fort, and Matheran mountain range.

The Fort was used as a watchtower to protect the trade routes. Sondewadi and Wavarle are the base villages of Sondai Fort. Sondewadi village is situated at 1/4th height of this Fort.

There are two water cisterns on, and steps are carved out of rocks to go on the topmost point where an idol of Sondai Devi stands.

Two more water cisterns are on the way and have potable water. Wavarle is another village from where a bit difficult approach to the fort passes through the dense forest.

An iron ladder, has been installed while reaching the summit. It has made the climb till the summit to seek the blessing of Sondai Devi temple safer for all the hikers and devotees.

Sondai is a small fort, well, less of a fort and more a watchtower. It’s a part of the Karjat or Matheran range of mountains. A less known Fort, the name of the fort is derived from the temple of Goddess Sondai at the top of the mountain. Sondewadi, the base village for the trek is a small hamlet of a few huts. No other information regarding this watch tower is available. The route is easy and it takes approx 1 hrs to reach the top. One need to take care during monsoon, as route might become slippery. Sondewadi village was not our way still, we were going in right direction. Soon the iron ladders were visible. Climbing ladders are the most interesting part of this trek. These ladders are put up by villagers itself. On the left of the 1st ladder, there are two water tanks, which are the home of frogs. These cisterns are exactly at the edge of the trail. The trail from 2nd ladder directly leads to the top of the mountain. It was 11:00 AM when we reached the top of the watchtower. There is a small Sondai Devi idol. According to villagers, there is no mandir like structure but the tree is the only mandir for the idols. There are couple are monkeys are seen on the fort.. Really good time on the fort.. Please don't throw water bottle or other type of plastics on fort.. And don't right names in the fort area.. Surely visit once...thank you
