Surya Regional Water Supply Scheme: A Strategic Initiative for Sustainable Urban Growth
The Surya Regional Water Supply Scheme, undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is a landmark project aimed at addressing the critical water needs of the rapidly expanding urban and semi-urban areas within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). With a substantial capacity of 403 million liters per day (MLD), this project is designed to provide a reliable bulk water supply to the Mira-Bhayander and Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporations, alongside MMRDA’s rental housing projects and 27 villages in the western sub-region of MMR.
Approved in October 2016, with an estimated cost of ₹1977.29 crores, this scheme underscores the MMRDA’s commitment to sustainable urban development. The meticulous planning of this project involves the extraction of raw water from the Kawadas pickup weir, located downstream of the Surya dam, and its conveyance to the proposed Water Treatment Plant at Surya Nagar. Post-treatment, the water will be transported via an extensive underground pipeline network that runs along key routes, including the State Highway, ZP Road, and National Highway No. 8, ensuring efficient distribution to the Master Balancing Reservoirs (MBRs) of Mira-Bhayander and Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporations at Ghodbunder, Chene, and Kashidkoper.
This scheme is not just an infrastructure project but a critical step towards ensuring the availability of clean water to support the burgeoning populations of these regions. The MMRDA’s foresight in implementing such a comprehensive water supply scheme will play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life and supporting the sustainable growth of one of India’s most densely...
