It takes you back in the history to 12th Century, the pre-bahamani era. (Bahamani was one of the major and Independent Muslim kingdom in Southern India which Ruled for over 300 years then dissolved in the Hyderabad Provience in British era). It's a fort built in the medium hillocks of Balaghat ranges. Although built on flat land (Bhuikot), the fort has a 40ft deep trench in between it's outer walls and the compound. Most recent military (and political)) activity at this fort was the famous battle of Marathas led by Sadashiv rao Bhau & the Nizams in year 1818, soon after the treaty of Udgir was signed off. This battle stopped the encroachment of British colonial rules to Nizam ruled Hyderabad Provicence. Today this fort is one of neglected forts by MTDC and Archeological Dept.

Awesome place Yadgir Fort, Karnataka ----- Yadgir was once known as Yetagiri, and was ruled by the Kalyana Chalukyas, Yadavas, Cholas, Bahmani Sultans, Adil Shahis and the Nizams. Yadagir is one of the largest forts of Karnataka. The fort was built by the Kalyana Chalukyas. Later, it was strengthened by the Yadava rulers. The inscription located on the fort’s entrance (Northeast) says the fort was built by Sagar Jagannath. Yadgir fort has a mix of influences of architectural styles. It is full of historical monuments and the majestic fort with three rounds of fortifications, three ancient temples (Bhuvaneshwari/ Bhavani Devi temple, Ramalingeshwara Shiva temple, Teerthankara/Jain cave), medieval mosque, Twin step wells and Water tanks on a hill

Udgir Fort, located in the town of Udgir in Maharashtra's Latur district, is a significant historical monument with deep ties to the Maratha Empire. Built during the pre-Bahmani period, this fort stands as a testimony to the region's rich history and the military prowess of its rulers.

The fort is most famous for the Battle of Udgir, fought in 1760 between the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad. This battle was crucial as it marked a significant victory for the Marathas under the leadership of Sadashivrao Bhau. The defeat of the Nizam's forces at Udgir compelled them to cede large territories to the Marathas, thus enhancing the latter's influence in the Deccan region.

Architecturally, Udgir Fort is a blend of defense and aesthetic appeal. The fort is built at an elevation and is surrounded by a deep trench, which was historically filled with water to deter invaders. The walls of the fort are robust, and the main entrance is fortified with iron spikes to protect against elephant charges during sieges.

Inside the fort, there are several structures, including palaces, mosques, and granaries, which indicate that it was not only a military stronghold but also a place of residence. The fort also houses the samadhi (tomb) of Udaygiri Maharaj, a saint after whom the fort and the town are named.

One of the fort's most intriguing features is the underground passages, which were used to store ammunition and supplies and as escape routes during emergencies. These passages connect various parts of the fort and add to its mystique.

Today, Udgir Fort, though in ruins, attracts history enthusiasts and tourists who come to explore its grandeur and learn about its strategic importance in Maratha history. The fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, making it a scenic and culturally rich...
