Overview
Location: Shkentalang village, near Jarain, West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. About 20 km from Jowai, and roughly 80–95 km from Shillong.
Type of waterfall: Two-tiered cascade, with a large plunge into a deep natural pool.
What’s Good
Scenic Beauty Phe Phe is often described as pristine, less commercialized, and very photogenic. The water is notably clear / turquoise-blue (especially outside peak monsoon), the surroundings are lush green, and the falls have a dramatic drop which looks beautiful.
Trek & Experience The trek to the falls is moderate — not too hard, but enough to feel like an adventure. You walk through meadows, forested patches, do a river/stream crossing, and there are some steep or slippery sections. But many say even beginners can do it with care.
Less Crowded Compared to more popular Meghalaya spots (like certain waterfalls around Cherrapunji or near Shillong), Phe Phe is still less crowded. This gives a more peaceful, “in nature” feel.
Accommodation & Stay Paradise Adventure Camp is nearby, offering cottages, tents, cabins. Camping is a possibility, and the settings are very natural. Some comfortable lodging options are also there. Staying nearby makes the visit more relaxed.
What to Be Careful About / Downsides
Trail Conditions
The path can be slippery, especially in the rain/monsoon. Mud, red soil, stream crossings, etc. Good footwear is a must.
The trail is not always well-marked. It helps to have a local guide or someone who knows.
Water Levels & Seasonal Variation
In monsoon (June-September), water flow is stronger / more dramatic, but also the trails are riskier/slippery and parts may be inaccessible.
In dry/out of monsoon seasons, the falls and pool are still beautiful but the flow is lesser. Some reviewers mention it’s less “full” in winter.
Accessibility / Travel Time You need to plan for travel from Shillong → Jowai → Jarain / Shkentalang, then the trek. The road up to a point may be rough. Also, mobile/internet signals may be weak closer to the falls.
Facilities Basic facilities are available near the camp (accommodation, maybe food). But once you’re on the trek, there aren’t many shops. If swimming, etc., you may need to carry your own supplies. Also safety: the pool is deep; swimming should be done with caution.
Best Time / Tips to Visit
Best time: October to April is widely recommended: less rain, clearer skies, safer trails.
What to carry: Good hiking shoes, rain gear (if uncertain), swimwear, towel, water, some snacks.
Arrive early: To avoid crowds and have enough daylight, since descending trail gets trickier later.
Guide: Helpful especially for first-timers to avoid confusion on path. Local guides are affordable...

Read moreSituated in Meghalaya, Phe Phe Fall stands out as one of the region's finest waterfalls. The journey to this breathtaking destination requires a hike of approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Your expedition encompasses traversing a river bed, strolling through flat terrain, and ultimately being guided by the captivating sound of the waterfall itself. Be prepared to pay an excessive fee of around 100 rupees to cross a minor canal, a fee that locals might consider over the top. Despite this, the overall experience remains highly satisfying. It's advisable to bring spare clothing along if you're keen on taking a refreshing bath. Keep in mind that the location tends to be somewhat secluded.
The splendor of Phe Phe Fall demands a certain level of dedication to reach its base, and without a doubt, the exertion is entirely justified.
Getting there involves driving your car until you're just beyond Loomkyntoor Resort. From that point onward, the journey continues on foot. In the initial phase, you'll cross a stream (it's wise to don waterproof shoes for this) and cover approximately 1 kilometer to reach the descent starting point. At this juncture, a shop offers refreshments for purchase. Descending from here, you'll travel an additional kilometer or less to arrive at the falls' base. Caution is advised, particularly for elderly individuals, as the path isn't a simple one.
Upon finally reaching your destination, your efforts will be rewarded with the sight of immaculately clear waters and the sheer power of the cascading water, inevitably resulting in a thorough soaking (carrying an extra set of clothes would be wise if you intend to luxuriate in the pristine,...
