Wei Sawdong Falls is a three-tiered waterfall located in Cherrapunji, Meghalaya. The fall is situated some 60 km southwest of Shillong in East Khasi Hills district and is in close proximity to another major waterfall, Dainthlen Falls. The name Wei Sawdong derives from the Khasi language (wei - resembling a pool, sawdong - square-shaped), spoken locally. Wei Sawdong Waterfall is classically wide and forms a square shape of waterfall. It is situated in Meghalaya state of India. Meghalaya is known as ” Abode of clouds” . This waterfall has gained its fame because of crystal clear water . You can clearly see the sand through the water . This is the ultimate nature’s que scenery with lots of environmental benefits . The view is like a cascade whether you see it from the brink or from further we cannot deny its beauty. This waterfall is also known as Diengdoh Waterfall . As it is in at the outskirts of Cherrapunji at Mawkama village which is around 40 kms from Shillong. To reach this waterfall you have to hike through the valley. It got the name Wei Sawdong because Wei means – ” it looks like a pool ” and Sawdong means – ” square shape”. This waterfall is a three step waterfall . Therefore on every step it forms a small pond which makes it beautiful beyond expressions. However reaching the spot needs physical practice and ability to trek without any proper stairs. It is a 200 meters deep valley . In order to reach there villagers have made the path and stairs with bamboo trees. The path is quite dangerous because the bamboo ridges became weak. We can see a natural waterfall flowing and mesmerizing us also we can sense that things feel ” right ” and full of life . The water of Wei Sawdong Waterfall is crystal clear and the waterfall announces the health of the ecosystem. To see the crystal clear water you must plan a trip from December to February . You can see different frames in different seasons starting with the rainy season. It is flowing with water all over the area . Then comes the winter which is the best for the waterfall and its beauty and at last comes summer where you can enjoy bathing under the waterfall . The most beautiful waterfalls of Meghalaya. There's a 15 min trek to reach at the bottom from where you sew complete view of the falls. The trek is a little difficult but...

It's a hilly region having the highest rainfall in India, Meghalaya has the maximum waterfalls too. If you ever go there in the monsoon, you might see a waterfall forming in every corner. However, some of the famous waterfalls out there have their own beauty. One of them waterfall is the Wei Sawdong Waterfall in Cherrapunji.

The Wei Sawdong Falls is too much Popular Most tourists compare the Wei Sawdong to the Pamukkale hot springs in Turkey.

Having to find these waterfalls does add to its beauty and charm. When you get its first aerial view, you will be startled for a moment to see its pure blue colour, form and tranquillity.

Beautiful blue spot appearing from nowhere in the middle of greenery.

the attraction of these waterfalls are so crazy. Once you’re there, you can’t stop staring at them.

The Thrilling Route to Wei Sawdong Falls It is located at a distance of 54 km from Shillong and 12.9 km from the Nohkalikai falls. Up to a certain point, you can drive from Cherrapunji. However, the falls won’t be visible from the main road or drive. You’ll have to go through a steep trek of 20 minutes to finally get there. That’s approximately a distance of 200 metres.

At first, you’ll encounter very steep steps made entirely with bamboo, logs and stone. At some points, you’ll even get ladders. Some of the steps here are muddy and can be slippery if it rained recently. You might even have to cross a few boulders. If you’re with a guide, the trek can be much simpler for you.

The locals have made the way simpler for travellers to get there. You need to make sure you’re wearing proper anti-skid trekking shoes to take this route.

While you’re still mid-way, you’ll get an aerial view of the waterfall at first. This is the point from where you can see all the 3 levels of the waterfall. As you proceed closer, the sound of the waterfall gets louder and louder. In the quiet and peaceful woods, this is the only sound you’ll be hearing.

Once you arrive at the foot of these waterfalls, you can enjoy your time taking pictures and dipping your feet into the water. The 20-minute risk you take is completely worth it when you arrive at a destination that is so heavenly.

The Wei Sawdong Waterfalls in Meghalaya are one of a kind. You’ll see plenty of waterfalls in Meghalaya but none of them will...

Here’s a sample travel experience narrative for visiting Wei Sawdong Falls, ideal for a blog, travel journal, or Instagram post:

🌿 My Magical Trek to Wei Sawdong Falls, Meghalaya

Tucked away in the misty hills near Cherrapunji, Wei Sawdong Falls had been on my bucket list ever since I saw those surreal photos online — a three-tiered waterfall cascading into aquamarine pools, almost too perfect to be real.

🥾 The Journey Begins

We started early from Cherrapunji, and after a 20-minute drive through pine-lined roads and misty valleys, we reached the starting point. There's no large signboard — just a small shack, a few locals, and the faint sound of water gurgling somewhere deep below.

The trail? Wild, raw, and exhilarating. Bamboo stairs wind their way down the cliff face, with lush greenery brushing your shoulders and mist cooling your skin. It’s slippery and steep, but absolutely thrilling. Every now and then, the trees part to give you glimpses of the falls — each view better than the last.

💧 First Glimpse — Unforgettable

When I finally stood at the viewpoint, my breath literally caught. Wei Sawdong looked like a natural infinity pool, with turquoise waters gently tumbling down the rocky tiers. The symmetry of the waterfall, combined with the almost unreal color of the water, made it look like a scene from a fantasy film.

I sat there for a long time, just soaking it in — the roar of the water, the clean smell of the forest, and the way the light danced through the mist.

📸 Moments & Mindfulness

Yes, I took a hundred photos. But more than that, I felt an overwhelming sense of calm and connection. There's no mobile network, no honking cars, just the music of nature and the whispering wind. It’s not a tourist trap — it’s a sacred, hidden world.

⚠️ Note to Fellow Travelers

The trail is not for the faint-hearted — good trekking shoes are a must, and avoid going during heavy monsoon. And please, respect the area: don’t litter, don’t shout, and don’t try to swim in the deep pools. Let this place stay wild.

❤️ Final Thought

Wei Sawdong is not just a waterfall — it’s a feeling. A secret the hills whisper to those willing to listen. I left with aching legs, muddy shoes, and a heart...
