Madh Fort, also known as Versova Fort, is a historic fortress located in the coastal village of Madh Island in Mumbai, India. Situated on the outskirts of the bustling city, the fort stands as a testimony to Mumbai's rich heritage and its strategic significance during ancient times.

Built in the 17th century, Madh Fort was originally constructed by the Portuguese as a watchtower to guard the coastline and defend against potential invasions. The fort changed hands multiple times throughout history and eventually came under the control of the Marathas and later the British.

The architecture of Madh Fort reflects a blend of Portuguese and Maratha influences. The structure is made of stone and boasts sturdy walls, bastions, and battlements. The fort overlooks the Arabian Sea, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding coastal landscape.

As visitors enter the fort, they are greeted by a large entrance gate, known as the "Mahdar," adorned with intricate carvings and embellishments. The fortification walls enclose a spacious courtyard, providing a serene and peaceful atmosphere amidst the historical ruins.

Inside the fort, one can explore the remnants of various structures, including residential quarters, storage rooms, and a small chapel. Despite the ravages of time, the architectural details such as arches, columns, and niches still bear traces of their former grandeur.

The highlight of Madh Fort is undoubtedly its panoramic view of the Arabian Sea. Standing atop the fort's ramparts, visitors can witness stunning sunsets and the vast expanse of the ocean. The location also attracts photography enthusiasts who capture the fort's rustic charm against the backdrop of the sea.

Madh Fort has gained popularity as a shooting location for Bollywood films and television shows, further adding to its allure. Its tranquil ambiance and historical charm make it a preferred spot for locals and tourists seeking a respite from the city's fast-paced life.

While the fort is not as well-maintained as some other historical sites in Mumbai, its rustic appeal and the sense of stepping back in time make it a unique destination for history enthusiasts and explorers. Madh Fort serves as a reminder of Mumbai's rich past and stands as a tangible link to the region's colonial history, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's diverse...

Telling Stories With Photos

A Post By: Darren Rowse

A picture is worth a thousand words – or so the saying goes.

Please note – at the end of this post there is an assignment that relates to it that we’ll be doing together this week in our Digital Photography Flickr Group. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

There are many reasons that I love photography, not the least of which is that a photograph (or a series of them) has the ability to convey stories to those that view them.

Over the centuries people have gathered around campfires, in town squares, over meals and in other places to tell their stories and these gatherings have become central to the shaping of cultures and communities. In more recent times some people have lamented that the art of story telling has been lost amidst the rise of different technologies.

Perhaps there is some truth in this – but I also wonder if perhaps it’s just the way we tell stories that has changed. One such medium for story telling in the time we live is digital photography.

A photograph has the ability to convey emotion, mood, narrative, ideas and messages – all of which are important elements of story telling.

Of course the gift of story telling is something that doesn’t just happen – good story tellers are intentional about learning how to tell stories and practice their craft. Following are a few tips for photographic story tellers.

The Short Story

Stories come in all shapes and sizes. Some are long (novels or even trilogies of novels) but others are short. Thinking...

Places visited: Versova Jetty ( a piece of a fold in #mumbai ), Madh #fort , Daana Pani beach, Andy's, Madh Island

I need an itenary to travel. I absolutely need one. But I manifest this need with wanting instant fun. I would refuse to travel with you if you had asked me out without a plan, because I am a very organised person. But I promise to jump in with you in your warning-less ( excuse my language) plans, because am a bantam of a breed of adrenaline rush. I like being aware of myself and my conscious being, bolstering more on how I like experiencing every bit of my feelings and emotions. Its life giving!

Madh Fort is a restricted place under the control of Indian Air Force. The place offers a strategic view and guards the coastline ( refer to video#4 to see the camp set up). It's a farmland and a small quiant fishing village. The last pictures depicts how very common it is to have many modes of transport from a 2 wheeler to a boat for both commute and business( that's about 80% of the houses). ( see that you got planes parked, by yours) The fossilized shell deposits, the external moulds and consolidated patterns formed, by water pressure and temperature differences within the rocks gives it a defined quadrilateral design, and the algae, makes it a decorative set up of colours.

Carry food, because you might not find enough restaurants in the vicinity of at...

Very nice fort clean and reasonably maintained this fort has a very good history Many people come here for pre wedding shoots because view from this fort is very good. Madh Fort was built by the Portuguese in Portuguese occupied India. They lost it during the war against Maratha empire when the Maratha Empire captured it in February 1739. And finally British took control over it after Bombay was passed on to British. Parking is available here near the fort No information about the fort is displayed anywhere no guide was available too I had to take out all the information from Google Best time to visit this fort is in the morning or in the evening and time taken to visit this fort Is half an hour View around this fort is very good and there are no shops around so you will have to carry food and water along and now the fort has been closed for people to visit from inside you will have to visit it from outside only

The oldest landmark I know near Andheri. From versova jetty it takes 5 mins in a boat to reach madh jetty then from there you can take a Rick or if you are going by bike then great. Pay rs50 for 1 side jetty fare with 2 individuals and 1 bike. It will take another 5 to 10 mins to reach this location. Overall this location is good, you can over see the Andheri, juhu, bandra and even the worli sea link from this point. The fort is not open for tourists or locals, it's acquired by the Indian airforce and has their camps inside, so one can only view the Killa from outside and cannot enter. There is this very old Shiv Mandir one can visit. Which is really peaceful. Overall it's a good place to chill with friends on weekends. ⚠️⚠️But be careful as the cops visit this place frequently.

This is one of the best fort near mumbai. You can go there by road or by via varsova koliwada to madh by boat service. This fort is used by airfoce. So entry in this fort is restricted. You need some special permission to go in this fort. It is still in very good condition. The Portuguese built Madh Fort, or Versova Fort, as a watchtower during the 17th century. However, the Portuguese lost this fort to the Marathas in the 1739 war. It stands proudly on the Madh Island, close to the Aksa Beach in Mumbai. Communities of local fishermen presently inhabit the area surrounding the fort. The fort is under the supervision of the Indian Air Force and Navy at present. Visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the coastline and city skyline from this fort.
