Jhinkra Waterfall, nestled near Bolani in the Keonjhar district of Odisha, India, is a serene and lesser-known natural attraction renowned for its tranquil beauty and lush surroundings. Cascading from a height of approximately 70-80 feet amidst dense forests and rock formations, it offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking an offbeat adventure. Located close to the Odisha-Jharkhand border, it’s an ideal spot for picnics and short hikes, complemented by the cultural vibrancy of nearby tribal communities. Location Jhinkra Waterfall is located near Bolani, approximately 10 km from Barbil and 82 km from Keonjhar town, close to the Odisha-Jharkhand border in Keonjhar district. It’s about 230 km from Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport and 11 km from Barbil Railway Station, the nearest railhead. Access is via National Highway 520 (NH-520) from Barbil to Bolani, followed by a short drive or taxi ride (Rs. 200-400) to a parking area about 400 m from the waterfall. A short trek through forest trails leads to the falls. Facilities and Amenities Available Viewing Area: Natural rock formations and forest trails offer vantage points for viewing the 70-80-foot cascade, ideal for photography. Activities: Short hikes and nature walks through surrounding forest trails; picnics are popular, but visitors must bring their own supplies. Food and Drink: Barbil (10 km) has restaurants serving Indian and Odia cuisine (Rs. 50-200). Best Time to Visit October to March is optimal, with pleasant weather (15°C-30°C) and lush greenery post-monsoon, ensuring a full waterfall flow. Winters (November-February) are ideal for picnics and hikes. Monsoons (July-September) enhance the cascade but increase risks of landslides and slippery trails in this mining region. Summers (April-June, up to 40°C) reduce water volume, making mornings (8:00 AM-10:00 AM) preferable. Timings Open throughout teh day, but best to visit between 9 AM and 5 PM. No formal gate. Daytime visits are recommended for safety due to the forested area and lack of lighting. Trekking is best before noon to avoid heat or evening crowds. No entry fee, no parking fee. No shops or food available for sale at the site. Bring your own food and water. Basic first-aid should be carried due to the remote setting. Transport: Taxi/auto from Barbil (Rs. 200-400); shared jeeps may cost less (Rs. 50-100).

One of the best spots around Barbil. After a few metres of walking, on a relatively easy gradient, through dense forest canopy and narrow drain like streams approximately 100 metres from vehicle parking area, one will reach this beautiful heavenly site. The multiple streams of water falling down the entire length of 60/70 feet steep vertical rocky wall is enchanting and captivating to watch. Moreover, the water droplets atomising and soaking the visitors and sometimes forming rainbows is an added value addition. The falling water wall in flat pool is suitable for taking a safe bath for willing persons. The spot has a low sunlight due to partial overhead canopy which gives it a dreamy look and feel. Overall an excellent spot for spending some time with the near and dear ones. Highly recommended.

Located amidst lush canopies, this spot is a haven for birdwatchers and butterfly enthusiasts. A short, scenic path leads to the breathtaking falls, where water cascades over layered blackish rocks, creating a stunning visual effect.

However, despite its natural beauty, the area faces significant environmental and safety concerns. The lack of protection and regulation has led to rampant plastic pollution, while the open consumption of liquor by visitors, even in the early evening hours when families are present, is alarming.

To elevate this gem into a world-class tourist destination, we urge the Odisha Government to provide enhanced security measures, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience for visitors. With proper protection and maintenance, this spot can truly thrive as a showcase of Odisha's...
