If you are in Rourkela then this place should be visited specially in rainy season. When all the lockgates are open its a treat to watch. Just 40 minutes drive from Rourkela station to reach this place. Boating facility should be started by tourism department here to attract more tourists.

Some exciting information about the Mandira Dam and Reservoir, a breathtaking destination located just 32 km from Rourkela Town in the Sundargarh District of Odisha. The Mandira Dam, built over the Shankh River, is a marvel of engineering and a sight to behold. Situated 16 km upstream from Mandira, the dam is surrounded by hills and lush green forests, creating a picturesque backdrop that enhances the beauty of the place. The Mandira Reservoir, formed by the dam, serves as a vital water source for the Rourkela steel plant, farming activities, and the city of Rourkela, playing a crucial role in sustaining the region's livelihood and industry. In addition to its practical significance, the area around the Mandira Dam is a haven for nature enthusiasts and tourists. The serene surroundings and the tranquil waters of the reservoir make it a perfect spot for relaxation and rejuvenation. Visitors can also explore the Shiva Temple and a beautiful nature park located near the dam, adding a spiritual and serene dimension to the experience. One of the highlights of the Mandira Dam is the stunning viewpoint that offers a panoramic view of the entire dam and its surroundings. This vantage point provides a breathtaking perspective, allowing visitors to take in the full grandeur of the dam and the natural beauty that surrounds it. The charm of Mandira Dam and Reservoir is not limited to its natural beauty alone. Mandira Dam, although built for exclusive water supply to Rourkela's steel plant, serves as a peaceful getaway from the dry industrial climate of the city. This earthen dam was built in 1957 over the river Sankha 35 km away from Rourkela.

While heading from Rourkela towards Sambalpur on the national highway, take a turn to the right at a place called Laing and proceed 3 km on a zig zag road to reach the dam, one road leading to the public part and the other taking you uphill to the VIP Guest House of the steel plant.

The public area is where most visitors gather for their picnic and for viewing the river across the dam. The guest house is out of bounds for all but those who have got their permits issued by CISF of the plant at Rourkela. So don't forget to get this vital document if you want to enter this old but grand guest house, surrounded by a well kept garden. The terrace can be approached by a winding staircase to be used as an excellent observation point of the dam and the surrounding hills. The beauty will mesmerise you.

If you want to have your food, it has to be arranged with the kitchen staff with word from the plant itself. Don't expect to be served anything without prior intimation. I've enjoyed the food in the guest house and it is nice to have the well prepared stuff in a breathtaking surroundings. The guest house walls are filled with vital information about the dam and also some sepia toned pictures of the inauguration time.

For decades Mandira dam has played its part for the Rourkela people as an ideal retreat from the monotony of...

It is a pleasant weekend getaway from Rourkela. Even if there isn't much to do, the scenery would also maintain you entertained. Prepare for the fact that there would be no amenities, so bring a few more drinkable refreshments. If you really want to explore the area, you'll just had to move a lot. Everybody must pay this place a visit. Whenever the gates seem to be accessible, it certainly looks better. The gates are mostly open from June through September. On the other side of the dam, there is indeed a park that is accessible to the public. With just a little endeavour, you can walk down to the riverbed. The natural beauty of this location is astonished.

There are two ways to get to the location. If you're looking for the some expedition, head the other way towards Birmitrapur. Large dam with a greater capacity for storage of water. It is a major source of water for SAIL,RSP in ROURKELA, as it supplies water to the steel township. Sightseeing is fantastic; many people visit there on a daily basis, and in the cold season, many people go camping and have picnics and gatherings while enjoying the outdoors. The dam's work began since 1957. This dam's water is primarily used by the Rourkela Steel Factory. Kansbahal Rail Station is the closest terminal. Travelers can use the watersport facilities. It's a lovely place to visit and outings also.

It's a perfect spot to maintain a presence if you want to be connected to nature. Excellent location!...
