The shrine is one of the most famous Shakti Pithas of Odisha. History of Ramachandi Temple Puri According to a folklore, in 17th century, a rebellious Hindu Brahmin named Kalapahad converted to Islam and vowed to demolish all the Hindu temples. In his quest to do so, he tried to destroy the Ramachandi Temple, situated on the backside of the Sun Temple. He was successful in damaging the Sun Temple to a large extent but was unable to destroy the Ramachandi Temple.
However, on the same night, Goddess Ramachandi appeared in the dream of one of her dedicated devotees and ordered him to build another temple of her near the bank of the Kusabhadra River. As per local beliefs, this is the temple that was built by that devotee.
Goddess Ramachandi is an incarnation of Goddess Durga, and therefore, festivals like Durga Puja, Dussehra and Kali Puja are celebrated in the temple every year. Another festival known as Sola Puja is also observed at the shrine for 16 days during the Durga Puja.
