Tampara lake is a fresh water lake situated east of Rushikulya River and is an elongated tabular wetlands lying between Arjyapalli in South west to Agastin nuagaon in north east with a total length of 9 Km.. The average width is 500 mts thus the lake is 4.5 sq. Km in area. However according to sri Chittaranjan Khamari-local guide, the lake is 300 hectares in area thus it is 3 sq. Km area. There is no visual channel connection between Tampara lake and Rushikulya River. However, the proximity of the lake with Rushikulya river mouth can not be denied. So during flooding on the onset of monsoon the lake gets recharged by the Rushikulya river. The lake supports wide biodiversity in the area. 60 species of birds and 46 species of fish has been reported in the review by Manoj Kumar Nayak- local guide. In Mumuri bana area luxuriant growth of Cashew nut plant, pine trees and mango plantation over 1.5 Km wide track that separate the lake from the Gopalpur sea in north and prevent the sea water intrusion into the lake.
