My solo visit to Tikarpada Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha was a refreshing retreat into nature, filled with thrilling wildlife sightings and scenic landscapes. Situated along the Mahanadi River, this sanctuary is a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, offering a mix of forest, river, and mountain views. The sanctuary is also famous for its rich biodiversity, including the rare Sarus Crane and Mugger Crocodile.
The Good: Wildlife Sightings: Tikarpada is known for its rich wildlife, including tigers, leopards, elephants, and crocodiles. I was fortunate to spot some elephants and various bird species during my visit, which was an exciting experience for any wildlife lover. Scenic Location: The sanctuary is set amidst the picturesque landscape of the Mahanadi River and dense forests. The river provides a peaceful backdrop, and the surrounding forest areas add to the sanctuary's natural beauty. Crocodile Viewing: The sanctuary is known for its crocodile population, especially the Mugger Crocodile. A boat ride along the Mahanadi River offers great views of these fascinating reptiles in their natural habitat. Bird Watching: Bird watchers will enjoy Tikarpada, as the sanctuary is home to a variety of bird species, including the Sarus Crane. I had the opportunity to see several unique bird species, making the visit even more rewarding. Less Crowded: Unlike many of the more popular wildlife reserves, Tikarpada offers a peaceful and less crowded experience. It’s perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy some solitude in nature. The Challenges: Limited Accessibility: The sanctuary is somewhat remote, and the roads leading to the sanctuary are not always well-maintained. It’s advisable to travel by a private vehicle or hire a local guide for a smoother experience. Basic Infrastructure: There are limited facilities within the sanctuary, such as food outlets and restrooms. Visitors should come prepared with water, snacks, and other essentials. Inconsistent Wildlife Sightings: While there is a good chance of seeing wildlife, sightings are never guaranteed. The dense forest and vast area mean that animals can be hard to spot, and patience is needed. Boat Ride Availability: The boat rides, which provide great opportunities for crocodile sightings, may not always be available on short notice, so it’s best to confirm in advance. Weather Considerations: The best time to visit is during the cooler months (October to March), as the summer heat can make trekking and outdoor activities uncomfortable. Suggestions for Future Visitors: Plan Your Visit in the Cooler Months: To avoid the intense summer heat, visit during the cooler months of October to March, which is also the best time for wildlife sightings. Hire a Local Guide: A guide will not only help you spot wildlife but also provide valuable insights into the sanctuary’s biodiversity and the best locations for sightings. Carry Essentials: Given the lack of amenities, make sure to bring water, snacks, insect repellent, and sunscreen. Wear Comfortable Shoes: The terrain can be rugged, especially if you plan to go on a trek or explore on foot, so sturdy shoes are a must. Respect Nature: Maintain a safe distance from wildlife and be mindful of your surroundings, especially around crocodiles. Avoid making loud noises or disturbing the animals. Final Thoughts: Tikarpada Wildlife Sanctuary is an excellent destination for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path wildlife experience. The sanctuary’s rich biodiversity, serene river views, and peaceful atmosphere offer an ideal environment for nature lovers and adventure seekers. While the lack of infrastructure and inconsistent wildlife sightings can be a challenge, the beauty of the sanctuary and the thrill of spotting animals make it a rewarding visit.

The road Via Athagarh is nice and you can witness other scenic beauty besides the road.
The route via Narsinghpur is also nice but you've to go through a village, which is generally crowded and the roads for around 35 km is not that good. But if you go via this route, you can also go to Deojhar waterfall that comes in this way. And another reason for taking this route is Hill pass. This road will take you through top of two hills. Personally I like these roads. And you can see the greenery hill top view. Two pic of such this place has been attached.
After entering the check gate where you need to pay for the pass, the road takes you through forest which is again worth for the journey. And not far than 15 km from the destination you can get a nice stream just beside the road. Don't miss that. It is really refreshing and beautiful. A pic of this place is also attached.
And of course the destination is just like you should give it a shot. And don't hesitate to take a boat ride, it'll take you to the place where you can see crocodiles on the bank of the river and inside the river as well. You'll witness true beauty on the boat ride. Pic of which...
