Bathinda (in Punjabi also known as Tabar-e-Hind meaning the Gateway to India) is a city and Municipal Corporation in Southern part of Punjab, India. It is one of the oldest cities in Punjab, Indiaand the current administrative headquarters of Bathinda District. It is in northwestern India in the Malwa Region, 227 km west of the capital city of Chandigarh and is the fifth largest city of Punjab. Bathinda's nicknamed the 'City of Lakes', courtesy of the artificial lakes in the city. The first empress of India, Razia Sultan was imprisoned in the Qila Mubarak fort in Bathinda. The gurudwara and mazaar of Haji Rattan is a popular tourist centre of Bathinda having connections with popular legends. Bathinda is a home of Central University of Punjaband upcoming AIIMS. Bathinda is home to two modern thermal power plants, Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant and Guru Hargobind Thermal Plantat Lehra Mohabbat. The city has a fertilizerplant,a large oil refinery, two cement plants (Ambuja Cements and UltraTech Cement Limited), a large army cantonment, an air force station, a zoo,and a historic Qila Mubarak fort. Bathinda is one of the largest food grain and cotton markets in northern India; the area around Bathinda is a prolific grape growing area.

Bhatinda was changed to Bathinda to conform to the phonetical expression as locally pronounced.[6]According to Henry George Raverty, Bathinda was known as Tabarhindh (Labb-ut-Twarikh). The earliest mention of Tabarhindh occurs in the Jami-Ul-Hakayat written about 607 Hijri or 1211 AD.

In 1004, Mahmud of Ghazni besieged the local fort, which was located on the route from the northwest into the rich Ganges valley.

In 1189, Muhammad Ghori attacked and occupied the fort of Bathinda. Prithvi Raj Chauhan, the ruler of this region, managed to recover possession of the fort thirteen months later in 1191 after the first battle of Tarain.

In 1634, a battle named Battle of Lahira (at Lahira in Bathinda) was fought between Guru Hargobind and Mughals.

In circa 1754, the town was conquered by Maharaja Ala Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala and since then it followed the history of erstwhile princely state of Patiala. With the dawn of independence and merger of Patiala and East Punjab States into a division called PEPSU, Bathinda become a full-fledged district with headquarters at Bathinda city.

It’s a good place to spend quality of time with family. There are 2 types of boats available - water boat costs 225/- (10-15 mins ride) and pedal boat costs 125/-. (30 minutes). Recommending visit at 6pm (in summers) to boat during sunset with better view. Food is unnecessary expensive and average taste. The thermal view of the lake is beautiful. Boating, Vehicle parking and food court also available near by lake. It was too difficult to sit on a sunny day. There should be some indoor or some other stuff to get protection from direct sunlight. In suggestion There should be planted more trees. 🌴🌲 Keep Green and save environment. Thanks and regards, Virtuous India Travelogue7 The thermal view of the lake is beautiful. Boating ⛵ is available. Good parking area. The food court is there with limited choices. It was too difficult to sit on a sunny day. There should be some indoor or some other stuff to get protection from direct sunlight. There should be more trees. 🌴🌲Beautiful place to visit. This lake is just near to the Thermal plant. The view is just awesome in the evening, when just take a dip into the lake. The view of power plant is also awesome. Parking area is also available with the charges of Rs20. You should visit this place if you are traveling towards Bathinda.. Lets go with me and explore...

Nice place for outing on weekends for family and friends, as there is a lot for water surfing, rafting, boating, motor sports with an iconic view of lakes with an ambience of good food that could sooth you for little outdoor snacks experience. If you want to have a night view of the lake it's awesome for that there is a good hotel that you can enjoy. It is inexpensive and good hospitality among the staff can be seen here. Moreover there is Pennsylvania mall in front of it where you can enjoy movies and games. If you want to eat out there is Handi restaurant nearby to cater the lust for hunger with bar facility. Food here is very exotic, tasty and inexpensive. If you want to fresh your mood you should at least pay one visit to this place. This place is situated on main state Highway Bathinda to amritsar road and easily accessible by road through public transportation or own vehicle. This place is more suitable for sight seeing, outing for picnic, outdoor excursion, small get together trip with limited budget as it is very cost effective place with a variety of choices nearby for other types of entertainment. You won't need to go far for movies or eating out...

The Lakes is probably one of the best places in Bathinda among the limited options. It's close to one of the multiplexes, and there are good many eateries beside it. Although in the evenings there may be a problem of mosquitoes. There are several boating options available including the paddle boat, speed boat and shikara. Also, depending on the season and the time of the day there may be some adventure sports happening like para sailing, zorbing, etc. The lake has a sufficient size for being explored by the paddle boat, and prices are quite reasonable. Just sitting by the lake has no cost; but everything else including the parking comes for a fees. The latest addition to the water sports happening at Bathinda Lakes is The Parasailing. It is wonderful thing to do it is a must try. It is a very big lake where large number of tourists as well as local public go for morning and evening walk. In the evening, people go for boating in this Lake. The boats here have been modelled on 'Kashmir-style 'Shikaras'. There are lot of eating joints around. People also, play music and enjoy their evenings. No fee for visiting the lake but boat ride is on payment.

Been there twice now. They have boat rides. Motor or paddle. Also have jet skis and other things listed but I didn't see any. I liked the paddle boat ride better than motor, boat and it's also way cheaper. Seems to me they have nearly doubled their prices from previous visit. There is Food and drinks bar. They also have children's rides like little helicopter ride. Service is so so. Vibe is great. You also have to pay for parking. Overall, it was a memorable experience. Lake and the views are beautiful, especially the power plant stacks in the backdrop. Would like to go there later in the evening next time just to experience the vibe of lights and sunset reflecting off the lake. Definitely worth going there.

Bathinda Lake is an artificial lake located near the atomic research center. It is the best place to hangout with friends and family on weekend. It is located very close to thermal power plant. It is about 5 km far away from the Bhatinda city to the north. This place is very busy at evening time. Entry ticket is free but if you want to drive the boat you need to take ticket. Sky diving is not available while we are visiting. Paid car parking is available here. Visiting timing is 09 am to 08 pm. Snacks and fast food are availabled here.
