Arthuna Temple Group is located at MDR 83, Hanuman Garhi, Arthuna, Rajasthan. Situated about 12 km from Galiakot, the religious centre of the Bohra community, this archaeological site is a major centre for history buffs.

It was the capital of the Vagad Parmar rulers of south-eastern Rajasthan who were feudal lords of the Parmar rulers of Malwa. Its ancient name was Utthunaka. They patronised Jainism and they were following Shivaism as they were from Lakulish Sect. They constructed a number of temples around the Gamela Talab. Hanuman Garhi is the most significant temple complex named after the installation of the colossal image of Hanuman in 1108 AD.

According to an inscription of 1080, it was an important trade centre where brass items and liquor were mainly traded. The most sacred place in this temple complex is the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple with a stepped Surya Kund. Other temples include Hanuman Garhi, Chausath Yogini, Someshwar, Kumbheshwar, Jain Temple Group, Mandaleshwar, Khand Dera, Shiva Temple, etc. An inscription at the Mandalesvara temple records that the Paramara king Chamundaraja built a Shiva temple called Mandalesa in honour of his father in 1079 CE.

Bhushan built a Jain temple like wise Vishnu and Hanuman Temples are also associated with ancient era.

Arthuna groups of temples : Preserved under archeological survey of India, these group of temples were built between 11th to 13th century by various Parmar kings. There are several Hindu and Jain temples built around Gamela lake. Majority of them are dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is said that during Mughal era, these temples were demolished. ASI managed to establish them from ruins found during excavation, still there are many temples which are not not preserved well. Several shiv lings can be seen in the site premises with one of them having size of more...

This is an essential destination to explore.

During my visit to Banswara, I was taken aback by the experience. The site evokes memories of 'Aihole' and 'Pattadakkal' in Karnataka. These are collections of 10th-century temples spread over a vast area. It was disheartening to observe that, despite being officially maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, these magnificent historical monuments seem to be in a state of neglect.

The intricacy of the carvings is exceptional. Given that this region is predominantly tribal, it seems to have been largely overlooked by the government of Rajasthan, resulting in a lack of attention towards this...

The district of Arthuna serves as a living lesson in history through the ruins of numerous Hindu and Jain temples in the area, providing a peak into the 11th-15th centuries. Some beautiful artwork emerges even from remnants of these temples, such as the statue depicting Shiva, Parvati and Ganesh; in a intertwined position. One of the Shaivite temple in a village around Arthuna has the Nandi Bull, the vehicle for Lord Shiva, carved at the entrance, as if guarding it from intruders. Similarly, there are many Jain temples, making Arthuna a holy place to visit to satisfy all your spiritual needs.
