गोरखनाथ या गोरक्षनाथ जी महाराज प्रथम शताब्दी के पूर्व नाथ योगीके थे ( प्रमाण भी हे राजा विक्रमादित्य के द्वारा बनाया गया पञ्चाङ्ग जिन्होंने विक्रम संवत की सुरुआत प्रथम सताब्दी से की थी जब कि गुरु गोरक्ष नाथ जी राजा भरथरी एवं इनके छोटे भाई राजा विक्रमादित्य के समय मे थे ) 1 गुरु गोरखनाथ जी ने पूरे भारत का भ्रमण किया और अनेकों ग्रन्थों की रचना की। गोरखनाथ जी का मन्दिर उत्तर प्रदेश के गोरखपुर नगर में स्थित है।[3] गोरखनाथ के नाम पर इस जिले का नाम गोरखपुर पड़ा है।

गुरु गोरखनाथ जी के नाम से ही नेपाल के गोरखाओं ने नाम पाया। नेपाल में एक जिला है गोरखा, उस जिले का नाम गोरखा भी इन्ही के नाम से पड़ा। माना जाता है कि गुरु गोरखनाथ सबसे पहले यहीं दिखे थे। गोरखा जिला में एक गुफा है जहाँ गोरखनाथ का पग चिन्ह है और उनकी एक मूर्ति भी है। यहाँ हर साल वैशाख पूर्णिमा को एक उत्सव मनाया जाता है जिसे 'रोट महोत्सव' कहते हैं और यहाँ मेला भी लगता है। गुरू गोरक्ष नाथ जी का एक स्थान उच्चे टीले गोगा मेड़ी,राजस्थान हनुमानगढ़ जिले में भी है।इनकी मढ़ी सोमनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग के नजदीक वेरावल में है। इनके साढ़े बारह पंथ होते हैं।

डॉ॰ बड़थ्वाल की खोज में निम्नलिखित ४० पुस्तकों का पता चला था, जिन्हें गोरखनाथ-रचित बताया जाता है। डॉ॰ बड़थ्वाल ने बहुत छानबीन के बाद इनमें प्रथम १४ ग्रंथों को असंदिग्ध रूप से प्राचीन माना, क्योंकि इनका उल्लेख प्रायः सभी प्रतियों में मिला। तेरहवीं पुस्तक ‘ग्यान चौंतीसा’ समय पर न मिल सकने के कारण उनके द्वारा संपादित संग्रह में नहीं आ सकी, परन्तु बाकी तेरह को गोरखनाथ की रचनाएँ समझकर उस संग्रह में उन्होंने प्रकाशित कर दिया है।[कृपया उद्धरण जोड़ें] पुस्तकें ये हैं-
