Taragarh Fort, Ajmer – A Majestic Glimpse into History 🏰
Taragarh Fort, perched high on the Aravalli hills overlooking the city of Ajmer, is a magnificent piece of Rajasthani heritage and an absolute treat for history lovers and adventure seekers alike. Built in the 8th century by King Ajaypal Chauhan, this ancient fort is believed to be one of the oldest hill forts in India.
🌄 Scenic Beauty and Architecture
The panoramic views from the fort are breathtaking, especially during sunrise and sunset. You can see the entire Ajmer city and the surrounding valley. The fort itself, though in ruins, speaks volumes through its massive gateways, thick walls, and underground water reservoirs. The architecture reflects a blend of Rajput military strategy and artistic expression.

Read moreif I tell you honestly, there is no fort now. I remember when I visited the Taragarh fort around 2011 it was there and I took lots of pics(unfortunately can’t share that time cloud storage was not available so I don’t have them now) but when we visited just after few months in 2012 it was completely demolished from the roots. I felt very disappointed and disheartened then. The thing is this hill where the TARAGARH FORT was built and situated, is now inhabited by Muslims, they had demolished the fort completely and building a mosque type of structure at the same place (construction work was ongoing there at that time). When I tried to ask locals that where is the fort, because we thought that we might have forgotten the place where it was then they misguide us and they took us to a place behind the hill from where the forest was visible down the hill and they said this is Taragarh Fort. I felt terrified like they were going to push us off the cliff but fortunately they were only trying to misguide us. That was rainy season and I guess they were celebrating something. We were very happy all the way up as the weather was pleasant and hill was at it’s finest beauty, we were enjoying the hilly roads covered in the clouds. But felt very bad when we reached there that another one of our historic structures was demolished brutally , only some part of PARKOTA/RAMPART(the protective boundary or outer wall of the fort) is remaining. Now I’ll...

The Taragarh fort is located on top of the Nagpahari hill or the Taragarh hill. At the foot of the 800 feet hill is the city of Ajmer, and the famous Ajmer-Sharif Dargah. The trek on the hill can be enjoyed through travelling in a jeep. The route has a lot of twists and turns and you get a panoramic view of the city once you’re on top. The fort, atop Taragarh — also known as Garh Beetli — is in a dilapidated state but a sought after tourist spot nonetheless due to the battles it has held during the reign of the Rajputs and Mughals. It had also once been used by European troops as a sanatorium. The fort, although in ruins, is a historical location like the city of Ajmer, which consists of various such historical places. Tourists are often attracted to the view that they get from the top of...
