Named after a great Indian sculptor, Chintamoni Kar this is a potential rainforest alongside the Baruipur bypass just 3 km away from Garia junction. This 17-acre forest is a naturalist’s delight and a treasure trove of myriad bird, animal and plant species. It was earlier known as Kayaler Bagan by locals and was a private mango orchard with a large number of fruit-bearing trees that attracted a lot of birds. The plot was bought by the state government in 1982 and converted into a bird sanctuary under the South 24 Parganas wildlife division. It is now home to around 40 bird and 12 mammal species, including mongoose and jungle cats, along with a variety of reptiles. Inside, it’s a jungle. Though the growth is not that dense for the first 50 metres or so, the scene changes as you go deeper down the trail. But water is scarce in the sanctuary. There are four seasonal ponds, which hold water for just around two months a year. There is a hand pump which tries to fill trays but it is not much of help as manpower is scarce and the growing craze for photography, with or without the right knowledge. Most bird watchers nowadays are basically bird photographers without any technical knowledge or ethics. Then there is problem of young ‘love birds’ of human kind who try to create their own space here is becoming a pain. Nevertheless, things are looking up with help from experts. Entry passes for ₹50.00 per head and the sanctuary averages about 70 visitors a day making it an ideal location for...
Read moreIMPORTANT: Prospective visitors please note that the winter timing is from 7am to 4:30pm and ticket counter closes 30mins prior to park closing.
The place used to be a quaint paradise for bird lovers few years back. Then a mobile tower was erected adjacent and the highway opened up just beside it; and the bird populace dropped significantly in this mini-forest during the recent years.
The best time to watch birds is morning during winter time and morning & evening during summer time. Morning time is recommended throughout the year as many other common creatures can be seen during that time.
The place is fantastic after a short burst of rain followed by clear sunlight during the early monsoon days as the dust settled on the leaves gets washed away in the first rain and the whole place turns vibrant green landscape. There is no problem with waterlogging in the alleyways but hardboots are recommended due to presence of various worms and snakes.
It is to be noted that children are not allowed inside. Also, this is a plastic and smoke free zone. Food and water can be taken inside but it would be a responsible act not to litter the premises with plastic packaging/bottles etc.
The present entry fee to the park is INR 50 per pax. Ample space is there at the side of the approach road for parking two and four wheelers. The staff is courteous and constantly patrol the inside alleys...
