One the most awe places to visit . Its beyond imagination the way it has been created and the immense power of Lord Rama reflects here . Not recommended for very elder people in main gufa of gupt godavari . Must visit place to see the gufa part and gupt godavari .

approximately 18 kilometers from Chitrakoot, Uttar Pradesh, is a notable pilgrimage site comprising two natural caves. According to local legends, these caves served as a refuge for Lord Rama and his brother, Lakshmana, during their 14-year exile.

Cave Descriptions: • First Cave: This spacious cave features a narrow entrance leading to a high and wide interior. Inside, visitors can observe two natural throne-like rock formations, which are believed to represent seats where Lord Rama and Lakshmana held court. • Second Cave: In contrast, the second cave is long and narrow, with a continuous stream of water flowing through it. Visitors often wade through knee-deep water to explore this cave, adding an adventurous aspect to their pilgrimage.

Mythological Significance:

The caves hold immense religious importance, as they are associated with various episodes from the Ramayana. The presence of the perennial stream inside the cave is considered a manifestation of the sacred Godavari River, which, according to legend, appeared here to serve Lord Rama.

Visitor Experience:

Exploring Gupt Godavari offers a unique blend of spirituality and adventure. The journey through the caves, especially navigating the water-filled passages, provides a memorable experience for pilgrims and tourists alike. The caves are illuminated at regular intervals, ensuring safety and enhancing the natural beauty of the rock formations.

Nearby Attractions:

Visitors to Gupt Godavari can also explore other significant sites in the Chitrakoot region, such as: • Ram Ghat: A sacred bathing spot on the banks of the Mandakini River. • Kamadgiri: A forested hill considered the heart of Chitrakoot, encircled by a pilgrimage path. • Sphatik Shila: A picturesque spot believed to be a resting place of Lord Rama and Sita.

Best Time to Visit:

The optimal period to visit Gupt Godavari is during the winter months, from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and conducive to exploration. Summers can be extremely hot, making cave exploration less comfortable.

How to Reach: • By Air: The nearest airport is Bamrauli Airport in Prayagraj (Allahabad), approximately 106 kilometers from Chitrakoot. • By Train: The closest railway station is Chitrakoot Dham Karwi, about 22 kilometers from Gupt Godavari. • By Road: Chitrakoot is well-connected by road, and taxis or private vehicles can be hired to reach Gupt Godavari from the town center.

Gupt Godavari stands as a testament to India’s rich mythological heritage and offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the serene and spiritually charged atmosphere...

Its a must visit place in Chitrakoot. Surely its a little far from town but worth it. There are two caves here.

The first one is now just a temple complex (its rude but fact). The second is where you'll notice the stream of River Godavari. Both caves have ample lighting arrangements made by the administration. Sadly the ventilation system was inadequate at the time of my visit. One of the ventilation fan was non-operational.

There is around knee height water inside the cave, slightly more just before the place from where water stream is originating inside the cave. The stream is just beautiful to look at.

There are few things to note: Don't buy any kind of offering for God. Its not officially permitted by the administration but the panda (pandit) & locals will force you to buy them by various rude & offensive tactics. Don't offer any kind of donations to any of the pandas (pujaris). They are plain & simple greedy. If do not offer donation to any one of the them while offering it to others, that particular one will start cursing. Its just not possible to offer donation to every panda (there are around 20 or so panda in the whole complex & none would accept anything below Rs.50). Its just better to avoid them altogether. Sadly don't expect MP Police to aid you here as well. They are helpless against these pandas & goons who charge illegal money for entering the place in the name of parking fees. There is no official parking alloted here.

Pandas & Tourist Extorting Goons are rampant on all tourist places in Madhya Pradesh Side...

I liked the caves. Cave no. 2 has water filled inside it. Water is upto knee level somewhere What Are Gupt Godavari Caves?

Located approximately 13 km from Chitrakoot in the Vindhya‑range hills of Madhya Pradesh .

The name “Gupt” means "secret" — the Godavari river mysteriously emerges, flows silently through the cave, then disappears underground .

Inside, water depth ranges from ankle to knee-level, and oxygenated, cool cave water creates a surreal yet calming experience .

🕉 Myth & Spiritual Context

Believed that Goddess Godavari took this hidden path to visit Lord Rama during his exile in Chitrakoot .

According to local legend, the caves include:

A narrow dry passage leading to a small shrine to Suyya Devi.

A larger water-filled passage, with sacred kundas named after Rama, Sita, and Hanuman, symbolizing their divine presence .

Natural rock formations are imagined as thrones or bow-shaped caverns, lending mystical ambiance that ties to mythic narratives .

🏞 What You’ll Experience

Two cave networks: one dry, narrow, the other water-filled and cavernous.

Pathways formed in Tirohan limestone, with high ceilings and stream cradled in ancient rock .

Light filtering through rock crevices illuminates the flowing water, showcasing the geology and natural carvings.

🕰 Practical Details

Timing: Typically open 7 AM to 6 PM .

Access: Rough stepping through the cave; waterproof shoes are recommended.

Available amenities: Basic; consider bringing a flashlight for deeper cavern...

This is a pair of caves, in which there is a tiny entrance, through which one can barely pass. Water trickles down in streams through the other cave, which can rise up to the length of our knees. It is said that Lord Rama and Lakshman once held their secret meetings, which is validated apparently by the throne like structures present in the cave. Although Chitrakoot is primarily a spiritual destination, there are some hidden surprises for bold travelers, especially those with a taste for adventurous, sometimes risky trips. Among such surprises is the series of caves named Gupt Godavari. One would be surprised as to how this cave is largely unknown to the world, despite its mystic charm matching the likes of Elephanta caves, Ajanta and Ellora caves as the list goes on. This is a place that is slowly emerging as one of the most popular destinations of India, owing to the enigmatic charm of nature. So if you're visiting _Chitrakoot, don't even dare to miss this site.
