Arulmigu Kailasanathar Temple is located in Tharamangalam, Tamil Nadu at a distance of 22 Kms from Salem. Its architecture is much-admired among Indian temples. It is widely known for the excellent stone carvings on the pillars. It is more than 1000 years old.

There is a sannadhi for Sri Nataraja and 63 Nayanmars statues are found within the temple. Scenes of the epic drama Ramayanam (Vali & Sugrivan fighting, Rama killing Vali) are carved at the pillars.
This ancient 10th-century temple boasts unique stone sculptures, vast halls, and ornate pillars. Monolithic stones, scriptures, and wonderful carvings are some of the interesting aspects of the temple. Significant stone carvings are Yali statue (having a rolling stone ball in its mouth), Rathi Manmadhan statue (Manmadhan statue would be visible from rathi’s side and rathi statue would not be visible from manmadhan side), Vali and Sukrivan (Vali and Sukrivan statues were carved in a single pillar while Lord Rama statue has been carved on another pillar who aims to kill Vali), rolling lotus flower statue, parrot statue, stone chains and Vinayagar idol (water poured over this statue will flow in to a well which is located below could only be heard and not visible). A secret passage which leads to Sokkanathar temple located at Amarakundhi was utilized by the king who built this temple. Dance competition between Lord Siva and Kali has been depicted vividly as sculptures. Bikshadanar, Rishipathni and Dakshnamoorthy statues have been carved intricately which remains feast to the eyes.
The temple entrance is 90 ft in height, with five storeys. It looks like elephants and horses driving a chariot. A notable feature is that sunlight falls on the horns of the Nandi on the 9th, 10th, and 11th of Masi month, and the light reflection looks like a crescent on Shiva's idol.
Tharamangalam Temple's huge stone wall of 306′ by 164′ was constructed in the 13th century. Non-rusting iron rods decorate the walls, and the door panels are beautifully carved from wood with Vishnu's avatars which are only seen here. There is a seperate sannadhi for Sahasralingam - infact it looks like a mini temple.
Pathala lingam is a very special shrine in this temple. It is believed that if you worship this underground Shiva lingam with green camphor every Tuesday, you will be blessed with marriage, children and career advancement. Another special feature of this temple is that the Surageswara has 3 heads and 3 legs. It is believed that if one worships him by offering rice mixed with pepper rasam and drinking Vadamalai, fever and other chronic diseases will be cured.
As per the Legend, As Lord Vishnu handed over her sister Goddess Parvati (thaarai vaarthu koduthal) to Lord Shiva through a marriage ceremony at this place, it is called Tharamangalam. As per another legend, Suriyan and Chandran worshipped Shiva in the evening; hence, they are also called Tharakapathy and Tharakan. As per another legend , Vali's wife, Tharakai, constructed the Tharamangalam Temple and worshipped Shiva here. Hence it is called Tharamangalam.
As per another Legend, when King Getti Mudali ruled the region with Amarakundhi as the capital, one cow denied milk to the people. But, it poured milk on a particular place. So, the angry king beat his servant, who was in charge of the cows. Lord Shiva appeared in the king's dream and revealed that he was buried in the mud with a treasure at the spot where the cow poured milk. The king found the Shiva lingam and constructed this temple using the buried treasure. It is one of the legends mentioned in the inscriptions of the Tharamangalam Temple.
Thaipoosam, a 15-day float festival that falls in January-February, draws a massive crowd of devotees to the temple. Shivaratri, Tiruvadhirai, Tirukarthikai, Pradosham, Full-moon days, Deepavali, and Makara Sankranti, are grandly celebrated in the Temple.
