This temple is situated on a small hill, is connected with a village on the Coromandel coast, Bomayapalaiyam, very near Pondicherry, where a Vera Saiva mutt is found.The legend of this kshetra begins with the end of Surapadma’s atrocious rule and his tearful appeal to Lord to accept him as his mount. According to sthalapurana, Surapadma, though fought against Muruga with all his might combining the tactile of asuramayopaya, was routed in the end. When he was about be slain, he appealed to the Lord to accept him as his vehicle, and he would serve him with fidelity. Moved by the tearful appeals, the Lord ordered him to do meditation with great steadfastness taking the shape of peacock (Mayil in Tamil) on the bank of Varaha near Mayilamalai. Nodding, he continued his appeal to the Lord to dwell for ever on the same hill. It was granted. Thus came into existence this Mayilamalai and the place called Mayilam, for short.The Main Sannidhi is facing East with Murugan and Valli Devesena. To the extreme left is the Vinayakar sannidhi and in-between these two is the Jeeva Samadhi of Bala Siddhar. Murugan is seen in kalyana kolam with his consorts here at this temple. The temple’s tank is called Balasiddhar Agniteertham.There is a separate Navagraha Sannidhi in the Temple.The temple itself was constructed, and continues to be maintained, by the Veera Saiva mutt “Bommayarpalayam Mutt”.

I have attended a marriage in busy day there, it was very hectic to reach there through car. But after marriage I visited the temple, all my anguish and tensions were gone in seconds. Love for murugan💜🛕✨ Now the review, the place is very pleasant but the route to reach the temple by car is very narrow please avoid the road that shows by gmaps take the parallel road to reach top that road will be big enough to drive free. The main road will be traffic in the morning times and also as there are many marriage halls and facilities along with them like the rooms and hotels in the same road, it will be difficult to reach by car, so I suggest if you have car park it below the parallel road and take a walk by road to reach the temple. Mainly the view from the front gate to the city is very pleasant and calming. It will help you through the rough days. # murgan. By the time I visited, there was some construction work going on in front of kopuram. It hindered my whole view for that. So I took some photos from side to show clearly how it looks. But inside temple photos are not allowed. There is even many monkeys around temple as you can see the videos, some monkey were bullies, not all. Some were very friendly I didn’t expect that. They even share there bananas that they got. It was great to see that. Totally it was not a good start but it was a great end of the day.

மயிலம் முருகன் கோயில் திண்டிவனத்திலிருந்து பதினைந்து கிலோமீட்டர் தூரத்திலும், பாண்டிச்சேரிலிருந்து முப்பது கிலோமீட்டர் தூரத்திலும் குன்றின் மேல் அமைந்துள்ளது.பாண்டி டோல் தாண்டிய பின் இடது புறம். திருச்சிறம்பலம் பஸ் நிலயம் எதிராக நேராக செல்ல வேண்டும். திறக்கும் நேரம் காலை 6 மணி முதல் 12மணி வரை,மாலை 4 மணி முதல் இரவு 8 மணி வரை திறந்திருக்கும். வரலாறு மயிலம் விழுப்புரம் மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள சிறிய கிராமம் ஆகும்.இங்குள்ள கோயில் சிறிய மலையில் அமைந்த கோயில் ஆகும். சோழமண்டல கடற்கரையில் உள்ள ஒரு கிராமத்தோடு இணைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. பாண்டிச்சேரிக்கு அருகில் உள்ளது. இது பிராமணர்களுக்கு நன்கொடை அளித்த கிராமமாக இருந்தது. சூரபத்மாவின் கொடூரமான ஆட்சியின் முடிவைக் கொண்டு இந்த தலத்தின் தல வரலாறு தொடங்குகிறது. சூரபூரணரின் கூற்றுப்படி, சூரபத்மா, முருகனுக்கு எதிராளியான அசுரமயோபாயத் தந்திரங்களை எல்லாம் பயன்படுத்தியும் தோல்வியுற்றார். இதன் பிறகு, சூரபத்மன் தன்னை முருகனின் வாகனமாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும்படி கண்ணீர் மல்க வேண்டியதாகப் புராணங்கள் கூறுகின்றன. கண்ணீருடனான வேண்டுதலால் மனம் மாறிய முருகக்கடவுள் மயில மலை அருகே வராகா ஆற்றங்கரையில் மயில் வடிவத்தை எடுக்க மிகுந்த உறுதியுடன் தியானம் செய்யும்படி கட்டளையிட்டதாகவும் புராணங்கள் குறிப்பிடுகின்றன. மேலும், சூரபத்மன் தான் அவ்வாறு தவம் செய்து மயில் வடிவத்தைப் பெறும் போது அதே மலையில் முருகன் நிரந்தரமாக இருந்து அருள்புரிய வேண்டும் எனவும் கேட்டுக்கொண்டதாகவும் புராணங்கள் குறிப்பிடுகின்றன. முருகன் அதற்கு இசைவு தெரிவித்ததாகவும், அதனால், இந்த மலை மயிலமலை என்றும் இந்த இடம் மயிலம் என்றும் குறிப்பிடப்படுவதாகத் தல வரலாறுகள் குறிப்பிடுகின்றன. மலையுச்சியில் உள்ள கோவில் பொம்மயாபுரம் மடாதிபதியால் சிறப்பான அளவில் கட்டப்பட்டது. மலையின் அடிவாரத்தில் நிறுவப்பட்ட மடம் கோவிலின் நிர்வாகத்தைக் கவனித்துக் கொள்கிறது. இந்த நிர்வாகத்தினர், பொதுமக்கள் மற்றும் பார்வையாளர்களுக்குத் தேவையான வசதிகளை ஏற்படுத்தித் தந்துள்ளனர். முருகனால் போரில் சூரபத்மன் தோற்கடிக்கப்பட்ட போது அவன் மனம் திருந்தி, இறையருள் வேண்டி இந்தப்பகுதிக்கு வந்து மயில் வடிவ மலையாக மாறி கடும் தவம் புரிந்ததாகவும், தவத்தில் மகிழ்ந்து முருகன் அவனுக்கு காட்சி தந்ததாகவும், அப்போது சூரபத்மன் தன்னை முருகனின் வாகனமாக ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் என முருகனிடம் வேண்டியதாகவும் மற்றொரு புராணத்தகவல் கூறுகிறது. மயில் வடிவ மலையாக இருந்து தான் தவம் புரிந்த இந்த மலைக்கு ‘மயூராசலம்’ எனப் பெயர் விளங்க வேண்டும் எனவும் முருகன் எந்த நாளும் இங்கு வீற்றிருந்து பக்தர்களுக்கு அருள் புரிய வேண்டும் என்றும் சூரபத்மன் கோரிக்கை வைத்ததாகவும், அதற்கு முருகன் அவனிடம், ‘‘எதிர் காலத்தில் பாலசித்தர் என்பவர் இங்கு தவம் புரிவார். அப்போது உன் விருப்பம் நிறைவேறும்!’’ என்று கூறிவிட்டு மறைந்ததாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது. பாலசித்தர் தவம் புரியும் காலம் வரையிலும் சூரபத்மன் மலையாக நிலை கொண்டு அங்கு காத்திருந்தான். ‘மயூராசலம்’ என்ற இந்தப் பெயரே பின்னர் மயிலம் என்று மருவியது என்கிறார்கள். பொதுவாகவே சித்தர்கள் ஜீவசமாதி அடைந்த தலங்களில், பக்தர்களுக்கு வேண்டும் வரங்கள் கிடைக்கும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை. எவரிடமும் சரணடையாத முருகனது வேலாயுதம், பாலசித்தரிடம் வசமானது என்பது ஐதீகம். இதிலிருந்து பாலசித்தரின் சக்தி விளங்கும். இன்றைக்கும் மயிலத்தில் நடக்கும் கந்த சஷ்டி விழாவின்போது சூர சம்ஹாரத்துக்குக் புறப்படும் முருகர், பாலசித்தரிடமிருந்தே வேலாயுதத்தைப் பெற்றுச் செல்கிறார். இது அருணகிரிநாதரால் பாடல் பெற்ற தலமாகும் .பாலசித்தருக்கு அடுத்து மூலவர் காட்சி தருகிறார். வள்ளி- தெய்வானையுடன் இணைந்து நின்ற கோலத்தில் காட்சி தரும் முருகனின் ஒரு கையில் வேல். இன்னொரு கையில் சேவற்கொடி. பெரும்பாலான கோயில்களிலும் முருகனின் வாகனமான மயில் தெற்கு நோக்கியோ, நேராகவோ இருக்கும். இங்கு மட்டும் வடக்குத் திசையை நோக்கியபடி இருப்பது கோயிலின் சிறப்பு. தவத்துக்கு உரிய திசை வடக்கு. சூரபத்மன் இங்கு வடக்கு நோக்கித் தவமிருந்து முருகனின் வாகனமாக மாறியதால், அதே திசையை நோக்கியபடி அமரும் பெருமை இங்குள்ள மயில் வாகனத்துக்கு கிடைத்திருக்கிறது. இதற்கு பக்கத்திலேயே திருவக்கரை வக்ரகாளியம்மன், பஞ்சவடி ஆஞ்சநேயர் ஆகிய கோயில்கள் இருப்பதால் எல்லாவற்றையும் தரிசிக்கலாம் .

This temple is situated on a small hill, is connected with a village on the Coromandel coast, Bomayapalaiyam, very near Pondicherry, where a Vera Saiva mutt is found.The legend of this kshetra begins with the end of Surapadma’s atrocious rule and his tearful appeal to Lord to accept him as his mount. According to sthalapurana, Surapadma, though fought against Muruga with all his might combining the tactile of asuramayopaya, was routed in the end. When he was about be slain, he appealed to the Lord to accept him as his vehicle, and he would serve him with fidelity. Moved by the tearful appeals, the Lord ordered him to do meditation with great steadfastness taking the shape of peacock (Mayil in Tamil) on the bank of Varaha near Mayilamalai. Nodding, he continued his appeal to the Lord to dwell for ever on the same hill. It was granted. Thus came into existence this Mayilamalai and the place called Mayilam, for short.The Main Sannidhi is facing East with Murugan and Valli Devesena. To the extreme left is the Vinayakar sannidhi and in-between these two is the Jeeva Samadhi of Bala Siddhar. Murugan is seen in kalyana kolam with his consorts here at this temple. I have attended a marriage in busy day there, it was very hectic to reach there through car. But after marriage I visited the temple, all my anguish and tensions were gone in seconds. Love for murugan💜🛕✨

Now the review, the place is very pleasant but the route to reach the temple by car is very narrow please avoid the road that shows by gmaps take the parallel road to reach top that road will be big enough to drive free.

The main road will be traffic in the morning times and also as there are many marriage halls and facilities along with them like the rooms and hotels in the same road, it will be difficult to reach by car, so I suggest if you have car park it below the parallel road and take a walk by road to reach the temple. Mainly the view from the front gate to the city is very pleasant and calming. It will help you through the rough days.

By the time I visited, there was some construction work going on in front of kopuram. It hindered my whole view for that. So I took some photos from side to show clearly how it looks. But inside temple photos are not allowed. There is even many monkeys around temple as you can see the videos, some monkey were bullies, not all. Some were very friendly I didn’t expect that.
