The present day Cholingapuram (Sholingar) in Ranipet district of Tamil Nadu is one of the 108 Vaishnava Divya Desams and one of the 22 Vaishnava temples in the Thondai region, and is considered a very good place of prayer. Thirumangaiyazhwar, Peyazhwar, Nammalwar etc. have performed Mangalasasana and sung songs to the Lord of this place. The Azhwars called this place Kadikashalam after the mythological name. The seven great ascetics, namely Vama Devar, Vasishta, Kathyapar Atri, Jamadagni, Gautama and Bharathuvaja, desired to see the lion in his gentle form and prayed to the Lord. Lord Sri Yoga Narasimha Swamy, as soon as he wished, granted them a vision in Tirumala for a moment (a moment), and this place came to be known as Kadikashalam. This place was called Cholasimmapuram Cholingapuram and is now called Cholinga. If the Narasimha avatar stands out among the avatars taken by Sriman Narayana, can it be denied? Isn't that the incarnation that clearly revealed the truth that God is everywhere? The greatness and power of the one who incarnated as a lion to help the boy Prahlada, who was studying in school, to make his words true, is the greatest strength of the devotee. Such a lion-like deity is the one who has the temple of Yoga Narasimha Swamy on Thirukkadigai Hill. Before entering the city of Cholingapuram via Arakkonam, the Thirukkulam and the Thoranavai, which are thick with shady trees, point to the hill of Emperuman. The beautiful pond is also known as Brahma Theertham or Thakkankulam. Since it is the pond from which the curse of the four faces is removed, it is also called Brahma Pushkarani. The Utthira temple is dedicated to the venerable Bhaktoshitha Perumal (Thakkan is his name). The flag raising ceremony and flag lowering ceremony are held on the Thiruvadhirai star in the month of Chithirai and the Chitra Pournami star on the Chithirai star. After the Brahmotsavam in the month of Chithirai, when people go up to Periyamalai to watch the flag lowering ceremony and to see the Dvaada Saradhanam, the Tirthavari is seen in this pond, which has become the Takkan pond. There is a beautiful temple and a 30-foot tall statue of Anjaneyar on the banks of this pond. In this temple, you can still see the wonderful statue of Lord Kachchiyappatti appearing in the Garuda Vahanam, especially in the temple of Lord Kanchipuram and the Devaraja appearing in the Garuda Vahanam to his true devotee Swami Thottacharya. If you bathe in the Thakkankulam, wear clean clothes and think cleanly, and go to the foot of the Periyamalai, you will find a pond. This is the Narasimha Theertham. This is the Theertham where Lord Shiva got rid of his Brahmahatti dosha by bathing. Giving alms and charity on the banks of this pond is more beneficial than going to the market. After bathing in the Narasimha Theertham or sprinkling the Theertham on your head, if you walk a few more steps, you will come to the steps of the mountain temple of the Lord Singha. How can I describe the wonderful scenes that you see when you climb the mountain with the grace of the Lord? The Periyamalai, which is 750 feet high and has 1305 steps, reaches the top of the mountain, worships the flagpole and enters. First, you should worship the auspicious Amritbalavalli Mother, the goddess of the festival. Arulmigu Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple, Sholingar - 631102, Ranipet District. There is an inscription of 14th century in the Big Hill and another of 17th century in Small Hill and also a inscription in Telugu Language. There is a small window opposite to Lord Narasimhas Shrine at Big Hill, through which the Lord give darsan to Yoga Anjeneya at Small Hill. Yoga Narasimhar is facing east and the Small Hill is at the eastern side of the Big Hill. Swamy Dhottachar used to worship Lord Varadaraja Perumal of Kanchi on the third day of Brahmotchavam every year. Once he was not able to visit kanchi and thus missed the Seva. The worried Dhottachar offered prayers to Lord Varadharajar sitting on the banks of Brahma Theertham at Sholinghur. Lord Varadarajar of Kanchi , pleased by the prayers of Swamy Dhottachar, appeared before him on Garuda Vahanam (Mount). This incident resulted in a ritual called Dhottachar Seva performed on the third day of Brahmmotchavam at Kanchi Varadarajar Temple even now.

Parking was straightforward (there’s a paid car park at the base), but everything after that was a real endurance test: 1 305 steep, winding steps The staircase zigzags up the hill with several turns, so it isn’t a simple straight climb. The last 100 steps are the steepest and have no sun-shade, so you’re exposed to full heat just when your legs are burning the most. Aggressive monkeys everywhere: Every 10–15 steps you’ll meet a troop scanning for anything they can snatch—flowers, coconuts, water bottles, shawl, even jasmine from women’s hair. Bring offerings hidden inside a bag or under a shawl; keep bottles out of sight and avoid plastic carry-bags. Despite temple staff trying to net off entrances, a few monkeys still get inside the mandapam and prasadam area. Hygiene & cleanliness: Monkey droppings are scattered along the stairs, making footing slippery and the smell unpleasant. Workers clean, but the sheer monkey population makes it an uphill battle—literally. Seating at the summit is limited; I ended up perching outside the rest-room and later at the rope-car platform while waiting hours for family members still stuck in the queue. A small paid-prasadam counter (puliyodarai, pongal, etc.) is handy but also crowded once rope-car pilgrims arrive. Overall Visiting this ancient hill shrine is spiritually rewarding, but be ready for a physically punishing, monkey-dodging ascent and long, cramped waits—especially if the rope car is your fallback for elders. Plan for half a day (or more), carry minimal, well-hidden belongings, and pack patience in bulk.

This sthalam is also named as "Kadigachalam". If we travel from Chennai, we have to first travel to Arakkonam. From their, by travelling about 25 Kms , we can reach this Sholingar. Lots of bus facilities are available from Arakkonam and lots of passenger trains stops at Sholingar station. The Malai Adi Vaaram (Bottom of the Mountain) of this temple is called "Konda Palayam". Konda means Hill and Palayam means a town.

Specials: Both in Periya and Chinna malai, the Perumal - Sri Yoga Narasimhar and Sri Yoga Anjaneyar are found in the Yoga Stage. The Small Mountain (Chinna Malai) is about 200 feet where lord Anjaneya is found in a sitting position found along with Sangu and Chakkaram in the west facing direction. Here, Sriman Narayanan in the form of Sri Narasimhar gave His dharshan to Anjaneyar. Aanjaneyar is considered to be the resemblence (or) Avathaar of Shiva, but here He is resembling the avathar of Sri Vishnu. It is said all evil activities are cured if we take bath in the theertham of this sthalam and by worshipping Yoga Narasimhar and Yoga Anjaneyar.

Moolavar and Thaayar: The Big Mountain (Periyamalai) is about 400 feet high where Moolavar - Sri Yoga Narasimar is found in Irundha (sitting) kolam facing his thirumugham towards East direction. The other names of the Perumal are "Thakaan" and "Akkarakani". Akkaram means Money and Wealth. This sthalam is also called as "Kadikachlam". ThaayarSri Yoga Anjaneyar The Thaayar of the Sthalam is Sri Amirtha Valli and she is found in a separate sannadhi.

Utsavar: Sri Bhaktavatsala Perumal (Thakkan), Periyapiratiyar and Bhoomi piratiyar are found in the Bhoga stage (Dhyanam stage) in the temple in Malai Adivaaram (foot hill). There are separate sannadhis for Andal, Alwars, Garuda Vagana Varadharaja Perumal, Erumbiyapa and Thottacharyaar. Both the Gods in Periyamala and Chinnamala, Narasimha and Anjaneya are in Santha Nilais (Yoga Stage).

Utsavams: All Utsavams are conducted to Sri Bhakthavatsalar of the temple at the foot-hill temple. Special Poojas for Thayaar on every friday are done. In Kaarthigai month and on Sundays, special poojas for Aajaneyar are done.

Mangalasasanam: Thirumangai Alwar - 3 Paasurams Pey Alwar - 1 Paasuram

Pushkarani: There are Four Pushkaranies. Amirtha Theertham (Thakkan Kulam). Narasimma Theertham. Hanumantha Theertham. Brahma Theertham.

Vimanam: Simha Koshtakkruthi (Simhagra) first vimaanam, found on the entrance of the Periya malai. Simha Koshtakkruthi (Simhagra) Vimaanam. When entered through the entrance and going round it, we can see the thaayar sannadhi and after it, we can get dharshan of Sri Yoga Narasimhar. Yoga Aanjaneyar's temple is also found on the top of the chinna malai. If we see the direction in which the Yoga Anjaneya is facing, we can see the Yoga Narasimhar's temple.

Sculptures and some historical news: This sthalam is also called as "Chola Lingapuram" since a chola king found a siva lingam and built a temple for it. Later, the shtalam is called as Cholasingapuram" and now as "Sholingapuram". Thiru Kadigaimalai - Gopuram Karikaala Cholan, when separating his Rajjyam (entire empire) into small districts, he named this place as "Kadigai Kottam". In this sthalam, pallava kings started numerous studying institutions and sculpturing centres. The steps from the foot hill to the mountain temple was...
