The story
Pleased with the penance of Jhirumbana Raja Maharishi, who was childless, Goddess Mahalakshmi herself was born here as his child. Once she grew up into a beautiful young girl, there was a svayamvara organised to find her match.
Lord Narayana came here in his Garuda Vahana in the guise of a king (Mannan) to participate in the Swayamvara. Having won over her, he took her away much to the wrath of the other kings who attacked him. Lord Narayana, displaying his Vishwaroopa, defeated them all. It is the Birth Place of two important Acharyas in the Srivaishnava tradition namely Sri Nathamunigal and Sri Yāmunācharya.
Sri Nathamunigal is the one who is responsible to find the lost works of Azhwars and document the Nalayira Divyaprabhandam. As this Perumal here showed the way for Divyaprabhandam (kattinathu naale), He is known as Kattumannar and this town is named as Kattumannarkoil.
Sri Yāmunācharya also known as Alavandar is the grandson of Sri Nathamunigal and has done many works in Sanskrit. He is an indirect Acharya to Sri Ramanujacharya and laid the foundation of Vishishtadwaita Vedanta philosophy.
Moolavar here is Sri Veera Narayana Perumal with Sridevi and Bhoodevi Thayar. Utsavar is Rajagopalaswamy with Rukmini and Satyabhama. Perumal gave Pratyaksham to Matanga Rishi. Thani Kovil Nachiyar is Maragathavalli Thayar.
Opposite to the main temple is Anjaneyar Temple and a Periya Kulam (Big Pond).
