Arulmigu Veerattaneswarar Temple — Attraction in Tamil Nadu

This is one of the Ashta (8) Veerattanam temples dedicated to the destroyer form of Lord Shiva. At this temple in Thiruvadhigai, the Lord is believed to have destroyed the 3 cities of Tripura, hence earning the name Tripurantaka or Veerattaneswarar. Lord is in a lingam form, accompanied by Parvati as Thripurasundari.

This is a large temple complex, with 3 levels of gopuram, one smaller than the earlier one as we near the sanctum. There is a garden dedicated to the trees that are proxies to the Navagrahas (9 planets) and the 27 nakshatras (cosmic stars), just inside the first complex. As we enter the second complex, we are greeted by a large Nandi and can view the sanctum through a grilled window. On the outer praharam or corridor, we find sannithis/ shrines for Lord Vinayaga, Lord Subrahmanya, and Goddess Durgai (Rajadurgai) as well as Navagrahas and Kalabhairava

Inside the innermost sanctum, we will find the Maha Lingam for Lord Veerattaneswarar, along with Urchava Murthies (deities used in processions during festivals)

This temple is also popular among Shaivites as Appar or Thirunavukarasar converted to Hinduism from Jainism at this temple, after praying for release from a disease, based on his sister Thilagavathi's suggestion. Appar's sister was associated with the temple and she has a separate shrine here as does Appar

Considering the temple as one of the prides of our panruti. Very old and ancient temple. The colour of stones and architecture completely reveals how old it must be . Even we have a buddha statue in a sivan temple revealing the story of Buddhism and saivism prevelaed in the ancient days. The presiding god is lord siva in the name of veerataneswarar (meaning strong /bold /powerful)It is believed that there are 8 incidents where the sivan has showed his veeram in ancient history, of which one such incident has happened here. (அட்ட வீராட்டன தலங்களில் ஒன்று). The presiding deity is lord shiva and periyanayagi is the goddess . Usually we can see in most sivan temple, goddess sanctum will be to the left of the god. But here it's an inverse...Goddess temple will be to the right of god . Hence symbolising the marriage ritual . Even in the main sanctum (moolavar) behind the lingam, on the walls we have a huge sculpture of sivan and parvathi as couple in the married form. Thirunavukkarasar who lived his most days here wanted to see the marriage of god and goddess and wanted them together to be seen. Hence the sculpture behind the lingam. Usually the sanctum is very dark and only agal lamps are lit and the sculpture is rarely seen. During pradhosham and aaru kaala poojai times the priest goes behind the lingam with the aarathi and shows it to the sculpture behind the lingam and it's a divine feeling to witness . .திருவதிகை மூலவர் – வீரட்டானம், சம்கார மூர்த்தி அம்மன் – பெரியநாயகி, திரிபுர சுந்தரி தல விருட்சம் – சரக்கொன்றை தீர்த்தம் – சூலத்தீர்த்தம், கிணறு தீர்த்தம், சக்கர தீர்த்தம், குளம், கெடில நதி பழமை – 1000 வருடங்களுக்கு முன் புராணப் பெயர் – அதிகாபுரி, திருஅதிகை வீரட்டானம் காலை 6மணி முதல் 12 மணி வரை மாலை 5 மணி முதல் இரவு 8 மணி வரை திறந்திருக்கும் பாடியவர்கள் – திருநாவுக்கரசர் , ஞானசம்பந்தர், சுந்தரர், மாணிக்கவாசகர் தாருகாட்சன், கமலாட்சன், வித்யுன்மாலி என்னும் மூன்று அசுரர்கள் கடுமையான தவங்கள் செய்து, “தங்களை யாராலும் வெல்லவோ கொல்லவோ முடியாது” என்று பிரம்மாவிடம் வரம் பெற்றனர். அவர்களால் தொல்லையடைந்தவர்கள் ஈசனிடம் முறையிட்டனர். அதன்படி பூமியைத் தேராகவும், சூரிய சந்திரர்களை தேர் சக்கரங்களாகவும், நான்கு வேதங்களைக் குதிரைகளாகவும், பிரம்மாவை தேரோட்டியாகவும் மற்ற தேவர்களை எல்லாம் தேருடன்(அதற்கு வைதிகத் தேர்) வரச் செய்தார். சுவாமி மேருமலையை வில்லாகவும் வாசுகி என்னும் பாம்பை நாணாகவும், திருமாலை அம்பாகவும் அம்பின் நுனியில் அக்னியையும் வைத்து, அந்த வில்லுடன் தேரில் ஏறினார். அச்சு முறிந்தது. பிள்ளையாரை வணங்காததால்தான் இப்படி என்று உணர்ந்து கணபதி பூஜை செய்து அவரது அருளை பெற்று தொடர்ந்தனர். தேரில் வந்த அனைத்து தேவர்களும் தங்களால்தான் அந்த அசுரர்கள் மடியப்போகிறார்கள் என்று நினைத்து கொண்டிருக்க, சிவபெருமான் அசுரர்கள் மீது வில் அம்பு எதையும் பயன்படுத்தவில்லை. அசுரர்களை பார்த்து சற்றே சிரித்தார். அவ்வளவுதான். உலகமே நடுங்கும்படியாக தீப்பிழம்பு ஏற்பட்டு அவர்கள் மூவரும் சாம்பலாயினர். தங்கள் உதவி இல்லாமலே சிவன் சம்காரம் செய்ததை உணர்ந்து தேவர்கள் வெட்கித் தலைகுனிந்தனர். ஈசன், ஒரே சமயத்தில் தேவர்கள், அசுரர்கள் இருவரது ஆணவத்தையும் அடக்கினார். பின்பு மூன்று அசுரர்களையும் மன்னித்து இருவரை தனது வாயில் காப்பாளர்களாகவும், ஒருவரை குடமுழா முழக்குபவனாகவும் ஆக்கி கொண்டார். மேற்கூறிய புராண வரலாறே திரிபுர சம்காரம் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. வழிபட்டவர்கள் : இந்திரன், பிரம்மன், திருமால், பாண்டவர்கள், சப்தரிஷிகள், வாயு, வருணன், யமன் முதலானோர். இறைவன் தேரில் வந்ததால் இத்திருக்கோயிலின் அமைப்பும் தேர் வடிவில் உள்ளது. இத்திருக்கோயிலின் கருவறை விமானத்தைப் பார்த்து இராஜ இராஜ சோழன் பிற்காலத்தில் தஞ்சையில் பெரிய கோயிலை கட்டினான். திருவதிகை கோயிலின் நிழல் தரையில் விழாதபடி கணித சாஸ்திர முறையுடன் பல்லவர்களால் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. எந்த ஆயுதமுமின்றி ஒரு அழகான சிரிப்பினாலேயே ஒரே நொடியில் நடைபெற்ற சிவபெருமானின் திரிபுரசம்காரம் நடைபெற்ற தலம். முப்புரம் எரியச்செய்த பெருமான் மூவருக்கு அருள் செய்தார். ஐந்தெழுத்தால் இறைவன் மும்மலங்களையும் சிதைத்தது இத்தலத்திலே. தேவாரம் முதன் முதலில் பாடப்பட்ட தலம் இதுவே ஆகும். முதன்முதலில் தேர் ஏற்பட்ட வரலாறு இதுவே ஆகும்.இன்றைக்கு கோயில்களில் தேர் இருக்க வேண்டிய ஐதீகம் உருவானதே இத்தலத்தில்தான்.அட்ட வீரட்டானத் தலங்களில் சிறப்புடையது. அட்ட வீரட்டானத் தலங்களில் அதிக பாடல் பெற்ற தலம் இதுவே. அட்ட வீரட்டானத் தலங்களில் மூவர் தமிழும் பெற்ற சிறப்பு தலம் இது. சிதறு தேங்காய்(சூறைத் தேங்காய் ) என்ற பழக்கம் உருவானதும் இத்தலத்தில்தான். மூலவருக்குப் பின்புறம் சுதையால் ஆன சுவாமி அம்பாள் திருமணக்கோலம் உள்ளது. திருநாவுக்கரசருக்கு திருமணக்கோலத்தில் காட்சி தந்த தலம் என்பதால் திருமணங்கள் நிறைய நடைபெறுகின்றன. கருவறை கோபுரம் நிரம்ப சுதைகளால் ஆனது. கருவறை விமான அமைப்பு, மண்டப அமைப்பு ரதம் போன்ற அமைப்பை கொண்டது. சித்திரையில் அப்பர் பெருமானுக்கு பத்து நாட்கள் சிறப்பாக விழா நடைபெறுகிறது. வைகாசியில் பிரம்ம உற்சவம் பத்து நாட்கள் விசாகத்தில் தேர் திருவிழாவும் திரிபுர சம்காரமும் நடைபெறுகிறது. உழவாரம் முதன்முதலில் திருநாவுக்கரசரால் இங்குதான் செய்யப்பெற்றது. பன்னிரெண்டு திருமுறைகளிலும் திரிபுரசம்கார நிகழ்ச்சியை பற்றியே அதிகமாக பாடப்பட்டுள்ளது இந்த இறைவனை வழிபடுவோர்க்கு ஆணவம், கன்மம், மாயை ஆகிய மும்மலங்களும் நீங்கும். அம்பாள் சந்நிதி சுவமிக்கு வலப்புறம் உள்ளது தனிச்சிறப்பு. இதனால் திருமணம் ஆகாதவர்கள் இங்கு வந்து பிரார்த்தனை செய்தால் திருமணம் உடனடியாக தீர்ந்து விடும். ஆணவமாய் வந்தவர்கள் இங்கு திரும்பவும் வரமாட்டார்கள். அந்த அளவுக்கு சக்தி வாய்ந்த தலம். திருவதிகை நகரின் மேற்கே சுமார் 8 கி.மீ. தொலைவில் திருவாமூர் என்ற ஊரில் பிறந்த திருநாவுக்கரசர் சமண மதத்தில் மிகவும் தீவிரமாக இருந்தார். அவரது சகோதரி திலகவதியார் சைவ சமயத்திலேயே இருந்து வீரட்டானேசுவரருக்கு தொண்டு செய்து வந்தார். அப்போது திருநாவுக்கரசருக்கு, கடுமையான சூலை நோய் (வயிற்று வலி) தாக்கியது. சமண சமயத்தவர்கள் அவரது வயிற்று வலியை நீக்க எவ்வளவோ முயன்றனர்.இத்தலத்து நாயகனை வேண்டி திருநீறு அணிந்து உண்டு வலி...
