Avalanche Lake - there is lot of confusion between upper bahavani, avalanche and emerald lake. upper bhavani is actual lake, to visit it one should receive permission from forest dept in coonoor or ooty which I believe is not easy to obtain. Most of the travellers visit avalanche lake and not actual upper bhavani lake. avalanche lake is back waters of upper bhavani dam. it's very clean probably bcoz one can't actually reach waters. You can just view from far and eatables are not allowed. no permission from forest dept, is required to visit avalanche lake; however, place is highly crowded and only a limited number of vehicles are allowed at a time. Personal vehicles go upto a fixed point, post that govt bus and bolero jeep takes you to the lake. It's a 1.5 hr drive in total with 3 view point - some random valley view, bahavani temple and starting of bahavani river and final & best one is avalanche lake. there are 2 checkposts on the way. first checkpost is completely worst and mis-managed. the person standing there said any random lie or he didn't understand things. we reached at around 12PM, he said entry is closed and will not be allowed and after half and hour we were allowed to enter once few other vehicles come out. try to park your vehicle as near to the post so that as soon as it open, you are the first one to enter. he might ask you mark and entry in register but that is not required at all. it just doesn't matter. After driving for 10-15 minutes one will reach next check post. Park your vehicles here. Get yourself listed on the counter - tell name, phone number and no. of members. ask about when roughly your number will come. payment has to be done at the time when your name came. jeep is 100 INR costly then bus. However, one doesn't have any choice. It's based on your number. If during your number jeep is available, you have to take jeep. Contrary to thoughts, Bus is better than jeep. the speaker making announcement of whose number came is not allowed and one should be present there to see if his/her number came. one can get early number in scenario like, place for 2 is left but group is of 4 then group with two will be accommodated. This place is highly mis-managed. One should try to reach early at 9-10 am. Generally, it would take 1-2 hours for your number to come otherwise. Not much options to eat and hence, it is good to carry your own food. One can have it while waiting for bus/jeep. Note that food is not allowed inside bus/jeep except water. the place is definitely...

This is our travel experience to the Avalanche Lake - on 24th May 2022.

Before starting our driver discouraged us from going. Initially he said it is closed. No tourist allowed, etc. At the Boat house we asked the Govt tourism dept staff about the Avalanche Lake. He said it is open, but around 28 km from the Boat house. He said it is a nice drive and weather also was sunny. Based on his confirmation we started our drive to Avalanche Lake.

The long drive to Avalanche Lake is really beautiful and scenic. If you are not used to narrow roads, then better to take an experienced local driver. The roads are good. Take along with you some snacks and drinking water, as on the way only 5 ltr water bottles are sold.

At the Lake Avalanche entrance you need to pay Rs 50 for the car and Rs 20 per person. From the entrance it is a long drive and very narrow road to the main office area. You can pay for the safari ride here. We just avoided the forest safari drive as during this season no wild animals venture out. Used the toilets (portable, Indian style only). Bucket of water is kept to flush after use. A small restaurant and tea stall is available at this point. You can trek down to the stream through the pine trees and down to the stream. As the weather suddenly changed, we changed our plans too. Enjoyed the scenic view from the top and returned, as few of the 'adventurous' youngsters expression said it all. They said not worth the trek. So that's it. Our trip to Avalanche Lake. But we took some videos and photos. Will...

I planned my trip on 14th june 2022 I reached avlancha dam and waited for tourist operators at avlancha dam to give me a vehicle for me and my wife so that we could go to avlancha lake.I visited the tourist ticket office where the concerned person entered my name. But the service of the tourist ticket office was pathetic as they kept us waiting for 3 hours for the vehicle. First, they said there should be 8 people for one vehicle so cost is 250,for one person. It would have been 500 for us. Than they kept us waiting by saying their are only 7 people so i will have to pay 45 rs extra to accomodate loss of one person, which would have been 590 for us. Despite agreeing to their demand of paying extra for the trip they kept us waiting by sending 8 people who came after us. Than i came to know that i will have to pay 2000rs for the whole vehicle as only 2 people will go. I came at 11 am and waited till 3pm for the vehicle but never got one. They made a fool of tourists like us who came for the trip. I had an argument with the tourist ticket office operator. But he didnt listen and was busy in eating again and again and gave me lame excuses for sending people before us. This he did despite entering my name in the ticket office register before everybody. I suggest to other tourists to not visit this place as they will be cheated in the name of extra money. I Conclude by saying they are interested only in making extra money and making a fool of tourists visiting there as they send people according to...
