The forest check post is the entry point to Nambi Kovil in Kalakad Reserve Forest which is a buffer region for Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger reserve and for Kanyakumari Wildlife sanctuary. The place is mostly visited by the locals for Recreational activities, mostly bathing in the Nambi River or for visiting the Nambi kovil. The route from check post to the Nambi kovil is very scenic and follows the river path. If you are not planning on trekking up to the temple, then it is very good place to bring kids and family, as the river stream is very clean and crystal clear with lot of tree shades on both sides near the check post. There is a lot of moneys along the river stream on the route to temple, but they are friendly and does not appear to bother the people or steal their belongings. Unless you are travelling with a group of people, it is not advisable to bring kids as there are lot insects and bugs in the woods. Also trekking uphill to temple is not advisable for the elderly people. There is a jeep service available at the check post, which can be hired to reach the temple. Currently they charging INR 200 per person. Bikes and cars are not allowed to travel beyond the check post, there is a open parking space where you can leave your vehicles before starting the trek. You find any shops or stalls until you reach the temple so make sure to carry a lot of water and foods for the trek, you will be needing it. Carry a lot of bananas if you like to feed the moneys, they will politely get it from you...
Read moreNot recommended to travel with a toddler. We travelled with a 2 year and a toddler, had a difficult time going up. There is a temple on the top and it's worth the ride. There are quite a few places where you can chill by the water, have a shower and enjoy your homemade food. If you're travelling with friends, be cautious - do not risk your life just for the sake of adventure.
Please note you need to buy a ticket at the entrance and they do not allow you to carry any kind of plastics with you. They didn't even allow a pack of biscuits as they're pretty much concerned about the environment. You'll find a lot of monkeys while going up and on the top of the hill. Jeep facility is available at the entrance, they charge 1500Rs. for 5 people (To and fro)
Overall it was a decent place to visit with friends and family except for toddlers and kids...
