Gunaseelam Sri Prasanna Venkatachalapathy Temple — Attraction in Tamil Nadu

Cauvery flows by the Panniru Garudaseva temple. The Papavinasam theertham is opposite to this temple. As all importance is attached to Lord alone, there is no shrine for Mother-Goddess or co-deities. Procession deity Srinivasa graces with His consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi wearing the Salagrama garland. Tirumanjanam is performed to the presiding deity daily. The abishek water and the sandal applied to the Lord are given as Prasad to the devotees. There are two gates in front of the main shrine on both sides, known as Utharayana and Dakshinayana. During the Purattasi (September-October) Brahmmotsava, Gunaseela darshan event is also followed. The Lord appears on his eagle vehicle Garuda on each Tiruvonam star day. Special pujas are performed on Vaikasi Visakam day. The temple is noted for treating those mentally distarded. There is a rehabilitation centre for the patients. They are made to sit in the shrine during the afternoon and night pujas. The abishek theertha is spilled on their face. It is said that Srudadeva, disciple of Sage Bharadwaha regained his vision. King Bahuviraja was cured of his paralysis in the legs. Prince of Koorjara kingdom not only was cured of his speech disorder but also became a poet and sung in praise of the Lord. People with any physical problem pray here for cure and mental peace. Temple History: This temple is a destination for those mentally ill. A devotee, Gunaseelar by name, after his darshan at Tirupathi, came here and begged the Lord to come and stay in his hermitage on the banks of Cauvery. The Lord obliged. The place came to be known as Gunaseelam after his name. As his Guru Thalpier called him to be with him, Gunaseela entrusted the puja duties and maintenance of the Lord to his disciple. Gunaseelam was a jungle then. Wild animals seiged the place. The disciple ran away from the place in fear. Perumal was covered by an ant-hill. Gnanavarma was ruling this region then. His cows came here for grazing. The milk gathered in the bowls was found consumed. He heard a voice that there was an idol in the ant-hill. Gunaseelam is about 20kms away from our home in Srirangam. Since we have not been able to go to Tirupati in six years and Srinivasa is our kula deivam or family Deity we decided to go to Gunaseelam today as it is believed that if you cant make it to Tirupathi Gunaseelam is an option. To come to the story there was this devotee called Gunaseelan who loved the Tirupathi Deity so much he prayed and meditated to Him to come to the banks of Kollidam . It is after him that the place came to be called Gunaseelam. The route from Srirangam to Gunaseelam on the banks of Kollidam is beautiful and as we travelled in the auto along upper Anicut it was a beautiful sight with fields growing plantains , maize etc. We first stopped by Kaveri and did prokshanam and went to have darsan of Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal . We had to buy entry tickets Rs.2 per person. We had exclusive darsan and did archana before doing pradakshinam. The temple is neat and clean and we were told that at about 12.00 noon devotees with pyschological problems assembled there to have tirumanjanam theertham splashed on their faces. People stayed here for 48 days to get this holy water sprinkling done. People claim to have become better after this. ஸ்ரீதால்பிய முனிவரின் அன்பைப் பெற்ற, அருந்தவ குணம் கொண்ட சீடர் குணசீல மகரிஷி, ஒரு சமயம் ஏழுமலைக்கு சென்ற குணசீலர் வேண்டியவருக்கு வேண்டு வதை அருளும் வேங்கட முடையான் ஸ்ரீவெங்கடாஜலபதியை தரிசனம் செய்தார். வெங்கடாஜலபதியின் அருளில் மூழ்கிப்போன குணசீல மகரிஷி, அவரை விட்டு அகல முடியாது.

பிரிந்து வாழ முடியாது என்று எண்ணினார். தன் உள்ளக்கிடக்கையை எம்பெருமானிடம் கோரிக்கையாக கொட்டித்தீர்த்தார். தன் ஆசிரமத்துக்கு எழுந்தருளி, என்றென்றும் தனக்கும், மக்களுக்கும் அருள்பாலிக்க வேண்டும் என்று வரம் வேண்டினார்.

பக்தர்களின் வேண்டுதலை நிறைவேற்றும் பரமாத்மா, தாம் திருவேங்கட மலையில் அர்ச்சாவதாரமாக இருந்து குபேரனிடம்தான் வாங்கிய திருமண கடனை அடைத்துக் கொண்டிருப்பதாகவும், கடன் தீரும் வரை தாம் அங்கிருந்து வர முடியாது என்றும் கூறினார்.

மேலும் குணசீலர் காவிரிக்கரையில் ஆசிரமம் அமைத்து தவம் புரிய வேண்டும் என்றும், வைகுண்டத்திலிருந்து ஸ்ரீவாசுதேவன்-ஸ்ரீலட்சுமியுடன் பிரசன்ன வெங்கடேசனாக தாம் அங்கு எழுந்தருளுவதாகவும் திருவாய் மலர்ந்தருளினார். அதன்படி குணசீல மகரிஷியும் காவிரி வடகரையில் ஆசிரமம் நிறுவி பிரசன்ன வெங்கடேசப்பெருமாள் எழுந்தருள கடும் தவம் புரிந்தார்.

அவரின் தவத்தை மெச்சி வெங்கடாஜலபதி பெருமாளும் கிருதயுகம், புரட்டாசி மாதம், சனிக்கிழமை, சிரவண நட்சத்திரம் கூடிய சுபதினத்தில், தனுர் லக்னத்தில், சந்திரனுடன் குரு சேர்ந்திருக்கும் வேளையில் எம்பெருமான் திவ்ய மங்கள சொரூபராக பிரசன்னம் ஆகி குடி கொண்டார்.

இவ்வாறு எழுந்தருளிய பிரசன்ன வெங்கடாஜலபதியை குணசீல மகரிஷி 3 யுகங்கள் தன் ஆசிரமத்தில் பூஜை புனஸ்காரங்களுடன், எவ்வித குறைபாடும் இன்றி வழிபட்டு வந்தார். இந்நிலையில் குணசீல மகரிஷி குரு ஸ்ரீதல்பிய முனிவர் பத்ரிகாசிரமம் சென்று தவம் புரிய விரும்பினார்.

தன் ஆத்மார்த்த சீடர் குணசீலரும் தன்னுடன் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற விருப்பம். இதை தம் தவ வலிமையால் உணர்ந்த குணசீலருக்கு பெரும் குழப்பம். தவமிருந்து, கிடைத்தற்கரிய செல்வமாய் பெற்ற பிரசன்ன வெங்கடா ஜலபதியை விட்டுப் பிரிவதா? தன்னை இவ்வளவு தூரம் உயர்த்திய குருநாதன் தல்பிய முனிவரை விட்டுப் பிரிவதா என்று தெரியவில்லை.

விடை காணமுடியாமல் தவித்த குணசீலர், தனக்கு நல்லதொரு முடிவு தருமாறு எம்பெருமான் பிரசன்ன வெங்கடேசனையே வேண்டினார். பெருமாளும் குணசீலரே, பத்ரிகாசிரமத்திலும் யாமே குடிகொண்டுள்ளோம். குருபக்தி குறைய வேண்டாம். தல்பியருடன் சென்று உம் சேவை தொடரட்டும் என்று அருள்பாலித்தார்.

எம்பெருமானின் உத்தரவை சிரமேற்கொண்டு நிறைவேற்றப் புறப்படும் முன் குணசீலர் இறைவனிடம் ஒரு வாரம் வேண்டினார். `வேண்டிய வருக்கு வேண்டியதை அருளும் வெங்கடேசா! தங்கள் கட்டளைப்படியே தல்பிய முனிவருடன் பத்ரிகாசிரமம் சென்று குருசேவையை தொடருகிறேன்.

இந்த புண்ணியஸ்தலம் இனி என் பெயரால் விளங்க வேண்டும். தங்களை நாடிவந்து வேண்டுவோரின் முன் `வினைப்பயன்கள் அனைத்தும் நீங்க வேண்டும். தீராத நோய்கள் எல்லாம் தீர வேண்டும். குறிப்பாக சித்தப்பிரமை உடையவர்கள் இங்கு வந்தால் தெளிவு பெற்றுச் செல்ல வேண்டும்.

கேட்டது கிடைக்க வேண்டும். நினைத்தது நடக்க வேண்டும். தென்திருப்பதி என்று மக்கள் போற்றி, பிரார்த்தனை தலமாக விளங்க வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டார். தனக்காக வேண்டாமல், தரணியில் உள்ள மக்களுக்காக வேண்டிய குணசீலரின் எண்ணத்தை எம்பெருமான் பாராட்டினார்.

`நீர் வேண்டிய படியே நடக்கும். யாம் சங்கு-சக்கரம் தரித்து, செங்கோலுடன் இங்கு காட்சி தருவோம். சகல நோய்களும் தீரும்' என்று அருள்பாலிக்க, குணசீல மகரிஷி பத்ரிகாசிரமம் புறப்பட்டு சென்றார். குணசீலர் போகும்முன்பு எம்பெருமானுக்கு சேவை செய்ய தன்சீடர்களில் ஒருவரை நியமித்து சென்றார்.
