The temple faces east with an entrance steps and mandapam on the east side. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam are in front of sanctum sanctorum. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. In Sanctum Moolavar and avidayar are square in shape excavated from the mother rock. In praharam Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Durgai, Bairavar, Chandran, Suryan, Saptamatrikas, Sri Girikujambal Piraisoodi Amman & Naganatha Swamy, and Kotravai. Ambal Meenakshi is in a separate temple faces east with sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. Dwarapalakis are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. ARCHITECTURE The temple consists of sanctum, sanctorum, ardha mandapam, maha mandapa, prahara mandapa, vasantha mandapa. From adhistam to prastaram, the temple was built with stone. The Sanctum Sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam and pattikai. The Bhitti starts with vedikai. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam. A Two tala vesara brick vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are in the tala and greeva koshtams. HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS In the northern portion of this village Thiruthangaal a hillock known as Tangalgiri, and this Shiva temple was built along with Sri Ninra Narayana Perumal. The inscriptions records the name of this place as ‘Karunilakudi Nattu Thiruthangal’. The praising song about Gurukulatharaiyan of Poongamil Garden is found in the inscription. It is to be noted that the first two lines of the song can also be seen in the stone scripture of Nellaiyappar temple. An 17th – 18th Century CE, Vijayanagara King Kumarappa Nayaka period inscription on the north wall of the central shrine of the Shiva temple, records an endowment of ¼ share of the UdaippanKulam village after purchasing it, for the purpose of conducting puja expenses of both Shiva and Amman. A 1032 CE inscription records the temples as Paramaswamy who willingly chose the hillock as his abode. A lake by name of Vallabha Pereri existed by the side of the temple. Ulli Bomman Kalangatha Kanda Nayakar, who attained martyrdom in a war at Thiruthangal, was sanctified by donating the places around Thiruthangal to his family.
